3.0 engine replacement Q

I have a friend with a 91 pickup with the 3.0. A few years back he had the recall done by Toyota and they put in a new engine. LAst week the engine had a major malfunction in the block and so it's toast. He's getting another one put in at a local garage that supposedly has about 90K miles (of course). So my question is what do you all do to keep the headgaskets from blowing on these. I know on my car I put some ARP head studs and a better headgasket on it to keep it from blowing (turbo application). But I'm not sure what the trick is on the 3.0's. Any other suggestions I could let him know about?

Thanks

Same deal there too.....definately use the head studs and torque them to a higher spec.
I believe the ARPs ask for 100 ft-lbs but don't quote me on that.

Okay, I couldn't find the head studs for that engine.

http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...&d=1&x=11&y=12

There's the page i pulled up, but couldn't find headstuds for the 3.0 in the truck's. Also, what headgasket should one use to avoid future "problems?"

Thanks.

Here are the headstuds for the 3.0L and are worth it to prevent the blown gasket problem from happening again.

Yes, they're worth it. Too bad they're 2X as pricey as ARP's.

Thanks fellas. SO I assume you just stick with factory replacement headgasket?

MHG require a machined mirror finish on both the block and head to properly seal. That's a bit of work & expense on top of the MHG. Try to find a multi-layer gasket that isn't metal if you can!
