3.0-engine loping
Hey guys, I'm getting ready to head off to college, so I'm trying to fix all the little things on my truck to make it in tip-top shape. I've just been fixing various rattles, etc. Now for the problem that I've been trying to put off: when taking off before the motor has warmed up, the motor "lopes." The best way I can think of to compare it to is a starter turning over on an almost dead battery. It just doesn't want to go. Once it gets up to speed, it runs perfect, and after it warms up, it does fine. What's the deal? The other thing is that if you try to rev it up and hold it there in neutral, it skips pretty badly. It also seems like it doesn't have any power for about 1/8-1/4 throttle. Like, when I change gears, I have to mash the pedal about 3/4 of the way to get it to speed up. It has new plugs and wires, though one plug (#6), is only in about half-way, as it started to get where I couldn't turn it, and I didn't want to break it off and fubar my head, but it's not losing compression. I've just finished cleaning the throttle body, which seems to have helped the skipping a little bit, and I tightened the throttle cable up. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The starting problem could be anything from needing to reshim the starter to a weak battery, bad cables or dirty connections in the starting circuit. As far as the throttle response, there are threads on the board regarding adjusting the throttle cable due to stretching over time, causing slow response and preventing WOT. Use the search engine and check the "Writeups" section.

(But you've already done that, didn't you?)

Get the spark plugs all in order and make sure you don't use any fancy plugs. The more expensive ones seem to suck in this engine. The best ones I found are the NGK v-power, which doesn't do anything other then create more edge to form a spark from.
If you still have any problems from there, I would get your injectors cleaned professionally. In other words; remove them, have them flow tested, cleaned and rebuilt, and flow tested again. This guy does a great job! Make sure to send off your cold start injector with them as that is most likely what would be wrong with your cold start problem provided the spark plug fix did not work.
HTH!

hehehe a choke is whats on a carbeurated engine to make the AF ratio RICH for starting - it closes the air input passage at startup. EFI doesnt have a choke, instead we have a throttle plate and a cold start injector...

Thanks a ton for all the suggestions! 94X4-it's an EFI engine, so it doesn't have a choke circuit, just a cold start injector. When I replaced the plugs, I put in the NGK V-power, so I'm good there. I know the fancy ones are crap on yotas. The thing is, is that it was doing all this before I changed the plugs, so the fubared plug isn't the culprit. We had our friend who's a mechanic check it out, and he said it was okay. Mind you, it does need to be fixed, and it may be causing some of the skipping, but I don't think it's the sole problem. I adjusted the throttle cable after reading one of the threads about it, and it help with throttle response quite a bit, but didn't really help with any of my problems. I also cleaned the TB, which took out some of the skipping, but the loping is still there. It idles perfectly smooth. The skipping and loping is worst at about 1800 RPM, then by 2000 it smoothes out and runs perfectly. Do you think my TPS has pooped out on me? If it has, I have one laying in the garage, so I could switch it out. Thanks again!

How many miles? I'd lean toward a bad fuel injector or two at this point. Mine had similar intermittent "surging" problems and it turned out one of my injectors was actually cracked. The others needed a cleaning, and once all of that was done it resolved the problem.

Sorry about that "Ag"..., "T"..., and "Bumpin'" and especially "93ToyKid", brain fart on my part (oooohh, look, I made a rhyme
).
I did'nt mean to mislead anyone, I had my head somewhere else on, apparently, an altogether different topic (the emissione EGR valve I think).
I'll endeavor to think twice in the future before I stick my foot into it again.
