3.0 cone filter conversion

i have seen this done... but i'm wondering what it involves.

there was one flexible pipe from the throttle body about 6" long... that attached to the MAFS and then directly to a cone filter.

that's it!

not of that other bull˟˟˟˟ that i see under my hood.

so my question is :
what is dispensible?
what parts of the intake system should i keep?

please advise... pics would help a lot

I would like to see some input on this subject also.

I see the cone adapters that attach to the MAF all the time on EBAY. This replaces the stock air filter box. Was wondering if they would be better then the stock airbox or any airbox modification. Everyone seems to give the K&N FIPK setup a thumbs down and this seems like a similar setup.

Would love to clean out all the unnecessary intake/baffles.

The setup you are describing is the same as a short ram intake. With this you will need to remove everything between the throttle body and the MAF. Then I think there is this big boxy looking thing on the front of the MAF. You will replace that with the cone filter.

This is the best mod I have done yet. It has a deep throaty tone at WOT and has noticeable gains throughout the band. And the best part: I can finally change my oil filter through the top of the engine bay!

I'll try to remember to post some pics of my setup. Maybe even get a little fancy and get a .wav file so you can hear the difference.

I retro-fitted a K&N Cone Filter that my cousin had laying around. I made the adaptor to fit the roucnd cone onto the square MAF. I left the eintire system from the MAF back. This resulted in a great sound, , but without replacing the stock system.....I didnt see the gains in power. Pretty much knew I would'nt though....just messing around one weekend.

There is a great TECH article which tell you step by step how to make the shortned elbow to replace the stock system from MAF back. I have had no time to make one for my 92....but will sometime.

I am back to stock for now.....BUT MAN IT SOUNDED GOOD. Made people turn their heads....and then their jaw dropped. Most people think CHEVOTA......nope.......its a 3.slowta!

ok well i did it

i'll post pics tomorrow....

i shortened the elbow that connected to the blowback catch can (i think), and put the MAF right there. fabbed a plate that bolts to the other end of the MAF with 3" ehaust pipe to the cone. on the metal tubing i put a brass fitting for the tube that once went to that box that was bolted to the top of the air filter box. and also put a fitting on a plate that i rivetted to the flexible elbow at the throttle body.

it ran like ˟˟˟˟ at first, and is definately running rich.

any thoughts or input will be much appreciated.

again, pics are coming.

any pics yet boys. Also on the top of the stock airbox there is a wire that plugs into it, it looks to me like a sensor or something what do you do with that when you put a cone filter on.

I also painted the plenium as well.

As far as extra HP you don't notice it that much.

here's one pic

I need to get the rest of my pictures developed...

this cost about $35 to do...

the cots of the cone filter, the hoses, and a couple brass fittings.

the rest of the parts were either part of the existing intake system, or scrap metal laying around. some 3" stainless exhaust pipe... and part of a scrap fender.

Indeed. That's the MAF, or mass air flow sensor for all intensive purposes... it's actually an AFM, Air Flow Meter, because it's mechanical rather than electrical, but who's being technical anyway?

I just threw on the cone filter last week and I am really happy with it. I got a noticeable amount more horspower and I had the K&N filter in the box to bein with. I have the 22re but I woud imaigine similar results for the 3.0. I did have to make a custom mount to suport the air flow meter since the air box had to go.

sure i'll do a write up... as soon as i get the rest of my pictures developed.

that was the total cost... ($35 ish)

i used the existing elbow from the TB and shortened it. the existing AFM from the airbox, a cone filter, a couple hoses, and some fittings...

the metal was all free...

i was in kansas when i did the mod... so i had to borrow tools. a sawzall, a MIG welder, and a grinder.
