i bought the truck with a blown engine, so i finally went on the freeway after the break in. i hit 85 and the truck seemed to be really high on the RPMs. my question is for you stock 22re, 5 speed, stock tires, and gears. what RPMs are u running at 80-85mph?
i really wish i had a tach.

 

I have a 3.0 but, at 85mph I'm guessing I'll be somewhere at 3300RPM+ Not really high, but the 22RE might be geared differently so I'm not sure, sorry.

 

Run a search on tach and 1st gen and I think you may find a thread where someone replaced the OEM dash with an aftermarket that had a tach. Straight forward install according to the member - I guess all the wiring was already there or something...

 

you mean the sr5 swap? you can put in the cluster out of an sr5 pickup(has a tach and gauges instead of idiot lights), i think you just need to run a wire for the tach and install an oil pressure sender

i don't even want to know how many RPM my truck would be running at 80mph. with 28" tires i was running about 3500 at about 65 or so

 

At 85 your pretty close to max speed (100?) so engine rpm should be pretty high.I just checked the tach on my 85 22re and it redlines at 5800 rpm.It's been so long since i v'e had stock tires on my truck i cant remember what it tached at 80+ but i'm pretty sure it was under 4000 rpm.

 

87 22RE with a W56 (5spd manual) 5th gear, 70MPH roughly 2800 RPM. When I drive home tonight after work, I'll hit a bunch of different speeds and write them down for you.

 

sounds about right - 3000 or a bit higher. The original gearing/tires put the engine rpm at highway speeds (60-65 mph) right in the middle of the powerband - the junction of the torque peak and horsepower peak - the area if graphed where they overlap. This is optimum with a small engine and this attention to gearing was yeat another example of good Toyota engineering. If I remember right the horsepower peak was at like 2800 and the torque peak at 2600, yet another reason why the 22RE was such a good little motor, it made real power in the usable range - compare this to a Dakota V6 claiming 175 hp but if you read the specs it makes less power than a 22RE until around 5500 rpm!! Who the hell wants to turn that many Rs to get some power!! (Big V8s make enough torque to go down the highway at 1600 rpm, don't try that with a 4 banger...!) So at 85 mph all stock I would expect to see 3200 ish rpms.

 

I have a stocker 92 22re 2wd with a sun pro mini tach installed. I will check the exact RPM at 80 and 85 on the way to work today and post it in about 2 hours. Installing the sun pro tach was simple. If you can do a radio you can do the tach install. Sun pro mini was about $40.

 

horsepower peak should be at 4800 and torque is around 2800 if you go by toyota specs

 

My 92 stocker 2wd 22re pick up hit 80 MPH @ 3200 RPM's and 85 MPH @ 3400 RPM's in fifth gear. I tried it fourth gear also 80 MPH @ 3800 RPM's. Did not feel like going 85 in fourth. Thank you for making me feel like my newly installed tach is useful for something.

 

yeah, it lets you know when you're engine is liable of exploding.... :p

if you have a tach and don't like looking at the road where you should be, you can determine the best shift points...but if you can't do that by ear i doubt you could with a little gauge you know?? lol.. yeah i'm bored so i thought i say somthin, sorry...

yes I get that feeling. I just slow down. Maybe these pickups were design for speeds less than 80 mph. I think red line is 5,500 RPM's but I am not sure. In fifth gear at 85 mph (3400 RPM) you are below red line. If you think this is bad imagine what the engine sound like near red line.

I had a 85 yota pickup 2wd 4 speed manual trans earlier in my life. When I first got i took it up to 110 mph in 4 gear. I got the impression the engine was going to explode any second so I never did that again but I just wanted to see what it was capable of.

I know from past expirence that you will pay at the pump if you drive around with these engines revved up. In my old 4 speed I noticed a huge difference in gas consuption from traveling 60 mph versus 80 mph.

especially my gf's hummer, be glad you don't own one of those goofy trucks they get 11mpg!! one day he punched it and the gas mileage estimatior read 2mpg....

I would take a yota over a H2 any day...unless of course i could sell the hummer for 4 toyotas.... hehe

I drove a ford for a while (Im sorry to admit) it was a gas hog at 60 mph it was a gas hog at 80 mph but not a huge difference in mpg as far as I could tell. What I am trying to say is that maybe the 22r(e) gets great mpg compared to other vehicals but losses it edge when reaching speeds of 85 mph (this is not a fact of course just what I suspect).

For people from the distant future doing searches for "RPMs": 3.4L 5SP runs 3196rpm @ 85mph, and 2690rpm for 4ECT.
