How do the two motors differ in terms of reliability, dependability, or longevity. 22re was supposedly one of the best engines made by toyota. What is the main big differences? How do they compare is basically what I,m asking?

 

are you thinking of swaping in the 2rz ?

If so, for the effort might as well go for the 3rz which is the 2.7
Also, I see your in california, The 2.4 2rz was only in 2wd trucks, It will be the biggest PITA if not impossible getting that smoged if your truck is 4wd.

Also, The 2rz is rated at 140 HP. where as the 3rz is at 150.
If you have a turbo 22re your right at about 150 also.
But a dyno could prove me wrong.

The 2rz and 3rzfe's are very reliable, I dont think many people notice the R denotation after the 2&3, Meaning it is an R series motor.
They are such good motors that Toyota is still putting them in tacomas as we speak.

the 22re is the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine. They quit using them in Tacomas after '96 2wds if I'm not mistaken... maybe it was sooner. Maybe you meant to ask about the 2.7L i4 aka 3rz? The Tacoma got the 3rz in '96, along withe the 3.4L v6, aka 5rz.
The 22re(2.4) and 3rz (2.7) are pretty similar. I'm sure the 3rz is just as reliable and dependable and long lasting as the 22re. I can't compare as I've only driven my roommates 2.7L twice. I've never owned one. Search around here. Someone will have mentioned reliability on this engine.
The main differences is the 2.4L uses 2.4 liters of air/fuel mixture in one full cycle, whereas the 2.7L uses 2.7 liters of fuel/air in its full cycle. The 22re has about 112 hp..? 116? and later 142hp in like '95. the 3rz produces 150 hp. I would make a gander that the 3rz gets better mpg.....but that all depends on your set-up, driving style, where you live, etc.

The 2rz compared to a 22re, They switch the sides of intake and exhaust, And it is a 16 valve head. Also your going to need the tranny and t-case from a donor

 

Up till 1995, 22re was the only 4cyl offered on pickups. When they came out with the tacoma, they offered the 2rz 2.4l in 2wd and 3rz 2.7l in 4wd trucks in addition to the new v6s. Other than the displacement and power diffeerence between the 2rz and 3rz, I think they are nearly identical, but I could be wrong. They are definately a very different engine from the 22re though.

 

though the 22re and 2rz are both R series block based engines, there were some design changes made. parts are not interchangeable between them. the rz engines are 16v (iirc), intake and exhaust are on the opposite side from the 22r/e.
if you're contemplating swapping into an earlier chassis, you'll need to swap the trans and all the electronics too. in 4wd versions, the flange for the front axle is on the left side (from inside the cab) as opposed to the right side. emissions compliance in cali will require several visits to the referee system and the typical testing requirements. either the 2 or 3rz could be swapped in because they are newer engines than the 22re. in that regard it's no different than swapping in a 350 and going through hoops to get it smog compliant.

You don't need to swap the trans the w-series ones will bolt up to the 2rz and 3rz

 

Thanks. I was just wondering what the new 2.4 or 2.7 4 cyl engines in tacomas differences were and why they just didnt improve the 22re if they could .(If it aint broke dont fix it theory) My 22rte engine with 56K orig is rated 135 hp but I dont really need more power since when I safely feel comfortable driving it is usually the speed limit anyway. I,ve looked around any never saw anyone ask the question or wonder the differences. So same bullet proof motor it seems but with less gas mileage.

 

I belive you need the bell housing from the 2rz/3rz for it to bolt to the trans.
