22r tech question.. Oil leak issue

I have a 85 yota pu the truck has 138,xxx original miles and is in need of some work. It consumes about a quart of oil a week which i had previously thought was because of bad piston rings. The exhaust smokes (white) at idle and gets darker at WOT.

I have noticed a bunch of oil come from the front of the head, which i understand to but a common issue with the 22r engine and is usually a sign of the engine getting ready to go, is this true?

I was thinking of replacing the head gasket and possibly the oil pump... would you think this would buy me some time until i can find an importer and throw in a jdm 22r or 2100??? or just get a tierd 22r and do a rebuild.

Thanks Yotatech!

Drew

it looks to becoming from the headgasket area, if i where stading in the front my truck with the hood popped and look down its just a nasty oilly mess down the front of the engine where the head mates to the block and below.

if it's white smoke at idle and blue under acceleration, i'd say it's time for a new engine. the 22Rs are pretty easy to rebuild.

btw, there's no such thing as a JDM 22R, all japanese trucks got the dinky 21R-U with 2.0l of displacement(compared to 2.4 of the 22R)

Valve Cover Gasket!
While you are at it, replace the PCV Valve AND the grommet around it.
Also..... get a FULL valve cover kit which replaces all the grommets and hardware.

My 22R has 300+ thousand on the original build and does the white smoke thing on start up then gets clear and clean within (literally) minutes.

I have lots of oil under mine, but it's from a leaking Birfield joint that needs rebuilt. (Passenger side) and blows the oil under the truck pretty good. Enuff, I thought at first I was leeking oil too.

BUT! I only add oil about once a month and drive it daily. I have heard that the PVC does get stuck open and can cause you to blow oil everywhere.

IF I were you (this is what I plan to do myself) is convert it to a 22RE while your under there doing some rebuilding. I tell ya' though, parts are damn cheap for these motors, so I say, find another block, build it the way you want and swap it in.

Good luck, nice thing is, afer you are done, you can count on years of service with it.
