Just purchased 2002 4Runner 2 Wheel Drive. 88,000 with new tires and brakes. One owner said only thing he'd do was replace the rear shocks. I took it to Les Schwab and they said everything is solid... including the shocks. A co-worker told me about a rear spring mod that would improve the ride comfort. The current ride is rough and bumpy. Can anyone provide some feedback or recommendations? Is there a mod available? Should I do the shocks and the mod? We're planning a 2000 mile trip and the current rough ride would make for a long trip. Thank you for your time.

 

What tires/ tire pressure?
What were you used to driving before this truck?

 

I know the tires are new and the tire pressure is set at the manufacturer recommended pressure. I'll follow up with the make of tires tomorrow but I'm fairly certain they are BF G's. I drive a 2004 F-150 4x4. We bought the 4Runner for our 16 year old son.

 

Which manufacturer, BFG or Toyota?

Toyota recommends 32psi front and rear for P265/70R16.
Don't go by the pressure on the tire sidewall, that's a maximum.

The factory springs/shocks are not that stiff.

 

4runners ride bumpy, I think. Its a subjective topic. The frame is similar to a pickup somewhat. Not a luxury or hybrid design. I run OME springs and am happy. Used to have tokico trekmasters shocks, basically stock feel. Guessing those shocks are original? Do you know? I've heard good things about Bilstein. And yes, definitely go for the fix yourself. Its rewarding and doesn't require many special tools, just patience. Stuff below loves to seize up and rust.
BFGs are nice. Good deal you got there with the low mileage 4runner.
