Hey, Im having the same problem right now, and I JUST replaced all three shifter solenoids inside the transmission. Im gonna go check for that exterior Torque Converter solenoid right now. Fingers crossed....

quick update: had to order the solenoid from Amazon for $70 as

"AUTEX A340E A343F Shift Solenoid 8542030110"

The local Orelly's/Advance had one for $250!!! but still would have had to wait for it to ship in. I overnited it for Friday, the 6th.

I guess im takin a couple days off work....

2001 4 runner 4x4 automatic dies when put into gear

Newbee- here, just bought 2001 4 runner 4x4 automatic and it dies when i put into gear. After reading past posts it appears my torque converter/valve body is bad. i'm having a tough time finding a reasonable priced tranny since 2001 & 2002 from what i hear are the only years that will be a direct swap. i have located a 2000 tranny with the throttle body cable on the driver side of the tranny. Does anyone know if or how once can adapt this to the 2001,2002 models? other ideas are appreciated as well - thanks

did you make sure your timing was lined up correct? Mines would die as soon as I’d put it into gear and it turned out my timing was really off

It was the torque converter so i found a used tranny with 108K miles. That was a challenge since only 2001 n 2002 fit. Thanks for taking the time to reply- have a great weekend and be safe. I m getting hooked on 4 runners i have 2020, 2001 and looking at 2003 for my son

Hey roddyjohn, I am having similar issues with my 2001 Tacoma, single cab, 4x4 manual trans. It stalls when I put it into gear and then accelerate, it idles fine, it also works fine in reverse. Do you think it's also the torque converter in my case? Don't know much about this issue so any help from the experts would be appreciated. thx much!!!

if it showed a code for the solenoid i would test it first if that checks out ok then i would suspect the over drive or converter could be bad. when you pull the pan to check the solenoid check for metal in the pan as well. the tough part is finding a good used tranny for the 2001 / 2002 since they are the only years that interchange.

Do you have an automatic or manual transmission?

You stated you have a manual transmission, but then talk about a torque converter, which would only be on the automatic transmission.

Yeah thx, figured that out. It's looking like an air intake issue....
