So I'm getting the truck listed above and right now it has some nice offroad tires and a pushbar on the front. I'm looking to increase its performance by improving fuel/air mixing using a home fabbed cold air intake and i was wondering your opinions on throttle body spacers for this engine. i know they do nothing for some cars and something for others. I dont have the money to upgrade the headers and exhaust until they need to be replaced by natural causes. Is there anything else i can do to improve horsepower that isnt terrribly complicated like camshafts and things requiring tuning and specs? also what do you guys think of the engine? it seems pretty throaty next to my camry 4 cyl. and it spins the tires pretty nicely

Well ya see, Short of a supercharger or turbo, your not going to get any sort of "performance" outta the 3RZ

CAI isnt going to do anything as the intake is already pulled from under the fender outside of the engine compartment.

Cam's would be an ok option, But my guess is $1,000 is out of your price range right now.

SO, My advice : Tune up : Spark plugs and wires, air filter, Some seafoam.
Then if you dont feel the engine is peppy enough regear the truck from the 3.90's or 4.10's to match whatever size "Nice offroad tires" are on the truck

If that doesnt work, Sell the Taco and go buy a Chevy.

Its a little 4cly so your not gonna have a speed demon. Is nice with power to weight ration however. Slap on a supercharger or turbo and some headers, exhaust, and intake (Dont buy those spacers) if you want to go all out and spend some $$$ If not some gears I think would be a good option for you and like scuba said a nice tune up never hurts.

ya the tune up is a given, do you guys have recommendations on sparkplugs? haha and like i said, im trying to keep it cheap, dropping a chevy engine in isn't gonna happen. i drove a s10 ZR2 5 speed and was not impressed with the power at all. i trust toyota and just want to keep the truck all toyota and upgrade the performance

as satated above there isn't much to do besides a supercharger or a turbo. Keep your money and enjoy the truck. I love my 3rz

I have a 99 2.7 5 spd. It's a great motor. I didn't buy a truck to race. Before I did anything to it, it could easily hold highway speeds (except mountain passes...where it would drop and hold steady around 55)

Since then, I haven't done too many performance mods, but I put an intake, headers, and a cat back with a larger diameter pipe (magnaflow muffler) to help with the larger breath.

It didn't do a whole lot for the lower end RPM's, but she can hold steady at around 75 going up the same passes. There is a definite increase in power at higher RPM's, and when in 5th gear it actually has some accelleration to it.

No, I most likely will never beat anyone off the line, but I needed a truck for all my mountain bikes, snowboard, camping, and work related items. Another bonus is that the gas mileage is excellent. And, you are getting a Toyota. Not only will they last forever if taken care of, but I think the motors produce a bit more "oomph" than the equivalent ford/chevy/dodge counterparts.

I have drivin a couple friends stock 6 cyl rangers, and with my upgrades I feel my engine is now comprable to those...obvously though, the 3.4 is still going to have more kick, but I don't mind the 2.7 at all. Nice little motor.

So I got the truck, haha the nice offroad tires i finally got to look at, there Cooper discoverer ST's the snow tires without the studs in. there loud of pavement but they tear up lawns pretty nice!!! Anyways I'm gonna seafoam it and put in some new plugs, i ended up with bosch plat plus plugs bc they were on sale, I'm gonna seafoam first and then put in the plugs. One question though, What hose, a diagram would be nice, should i use to put the potion in? i dont want to muck up any sensors on my new baby, it just had 3 replaced.
