2000 4Runner SR5 - 4x4 issue

Hi all,

Hope you're all doing well.

I went for a drive a few weeks ago and I noticed that my 4x4 green light on the dash panel began to flicker on and off. I also noticed clicking sounds that appear to be coming from under my shifter, the sounds corresponded with the light flickering. Finally, I started feeling like my 4x4 wanted to engage, as I began hearing all kinds of loud sounds coming from under my truck.

I finally have some time to tackle this issue and was wondering if any of you have had this experience.

I was going through my repair manual and it talks about two different transfer cases (VF2A and VF3AM). I believe my truck has the VF2A transfer case, as I've been reading online that the VF3AM came with the Limited Editions models. Is this correct?

The last thing I would like to mention is that in the last couple of days I've gone out for short distance drives and noticed that the problem has completely gone away. No more light flickering and no more weird sounds. It's weird.

Like always all advise is appreciated.

Thanks,

The blinking lights mean there is a malfunction with the system.

is your 4x4 the Multi-Mode system that has the j-shifter on the floor with a button on the side of the lever for 4hi on the fly?

the most likely issue is one of position sensors is malfunctioning and the 4wd computer is reading mismatched information.

My is not the Multi-Mode system. I don't have the button on the side of the lever.

Please see this video of my truck.
You can hear the weird sounds and see the blinking of the 4x4 dash light.

Thanks,

Are you in 4x4 on purpose?, or is it in 2wd in that vid and flickering 4x4, hard to tell, I'm not use to seeing manuals. It almost sounds like the 4WD ECU on the passenger side is freaking out, maybe pull the kick panel and check for water intrusion/damage. Vidoes are terrible for diagnosing sounds, but that was a really clear vid. I hope you don't have mice problems in your area, that can level up the difficulties of narrowing this down.

Its might be trying to engage the front diff actuator as it assumes you shifted to 4x4.

I am not in 4x4. I was driving in 2wd and the 4x4 light began flickering with the weird sounds. What's weird is that I've driven my car a dozen times since the video and the car has driven fine (not light flickering and no sounds). I only had this issue for about 2-3 days and then it went away. I am taking my truck to my mechanic for a tune-up and will mention this to him.

Thanks for your responses,

we installed a new actuator & when we started the truck, the dash 4wd lights are constantly flashing & the truck is in 4Hi. When we hit the button on the side of the shifter, the light will go out for a second & then come back on. We can’t get it out of 4WD. Any suggestions?
