Hey guys im new here I just bought a 2000 4Runner with 65k miles, I know its high but its in really good condition and I like it a lot. I have a old alpine head unit I had in my other car before it was taken back in as a lemon (well it is like 5 months old lol) and I want to put it in the 4Runner. I also have 4 new alpine speakers out of the would car I would like to put in this one. They are 2, 6.5's and 2 5x7's. Is there anyway that I will get these to fit? I have only seen sizes on the front two speakers being 6.5 but not the back for the 2000 year. Can anyone help me? Also I have a MAJOR opinion question to ask. Which do all of you prefer, the SR5 4WD System or the Limited's 4WD+Fulltime system? I now have a 2000 4Runner SR5 and just wanted to know which you guys thought was better or preferred. I believe all the door speakers are actually 6" speakers. That’s just what I remember reading here. anyone? anyone? Beuler It isn't hard to make the 6.5s fit though. As for the head unit, that isn't hard either. Just, find a good wiring diagram online (i found a few different ones for my 98 when looking) and get good with the ol' soldering iron! Or, drop by your local best buy/ car audio shop. They will drop it in for you. Good luck.

I fit 6 1/2" in the front doors and 5 1/4" in the rear doors without any mods on my 2000 SR5. Anything bigger you'll have to modify.

The front speakers are 6 1/2 STOCK but can also fit 5 1/4. I used 5 1/4 in the front since that's what I had in my Cherokee before I sold it. The rear speakers are actually 4". I somehow squeezed in 5 1/4. You have to modify the plastic housing a little in the door panel. There is a ridge on the rear mounting surface which prevents just any 5 1/4 speaker from fitting flush against the surface. The factory speakers are not your run-of-the-mill auto speakers and were obviously designed with the abnormal surface in mind. However, most aftermarket speakers don't take such things into account. The front wasn't so bad, but I still had to use silicone sealant as well to be sure that there was no air between the speakers and the plastic mounting surface. I think Toyota wanted to make it difficult to replace the factory speakers. Of course, you could just make your own custom mounting surface.

I would HIGHLY recommend adding rear tweeters. I added them and it made a WORLD of difference. I wish I did it sooner. I'm running Alpine DDrive separates front and rear. The tweeter really helps get the sound up and out and it's just the perfect balance for rear fill. Also, my rear passenger have commented how nice it sounds without being harsh.

 

Do you mean those back speakers are supposed to be water tight?? Is that why there is so much trouble replacing them?

Someone in this forum mentioned that the part time 4WD is better for off roading. I don't know why (technically). Can anyone shed some light on this?

 

A couple of reasons for sealing any speakers in their mounting include wanting to eliminate any vibration/buzzing and to eliminate the cancelling sound waves off of the back of the speakers if the "box" (door cavity) isn't intact. The door plane that the speaker mounts into is effectively an infinite baffle arrangement. Think of it as a small trunk in a car - that is why the manufacturers use the trunk as a sub enclosure for factory systems with subs. Don't go sealing the weep holes at the bottom of your doors - it is only inmportant to seal the front of the speaker from the back. If you want to get a taste of the cancelling sound waves I'm referring to, find anyone with an old GM car with the real shallow rear deck (mid 80's Grand Prix and Cutlass) and a set of 6x9 triax speakers sitting loose on top of the deck - likely really loud and really bad. I'm sure you've seen at least one of these guys - we all have. (I hope I haven't offended anyone).

 

I have Component 5 1/4 MB Quartz, and want to install them on my 99 4runner, what do I have to do in order to make them fit? Or can they even fit, any ideas. And will 6 1/2s fit in the back, or am I SOL.

I had some 5 1/4 Alpine DDrive's I put in my fronts. They in fine. You may need to use some silicone on the edges depending how yours fit.

 

Thanks, I just installed my Alpine CDA 7875 deck, and really want to install my MB Quartz 5.25 components in front, but was worried they might not fit, did you use anything to modify the speaker hole so that it would fit? Thanks again for the reply
