Question 2000 4Runner brake controller wiring

I'm in the middle of adding a Prodigy trailer brake controller to my 2000 4runner and I've discovered that the brakelight switch has four wires going to it instead of the two that I expected. Doe anyone know which wire I should tap to get the correct signal to the brake controller? I'm looking for a wire that goes positive when the brake pedel is pressed.

Thanks in advance,
Jay

I can get that information to you tonight, I know I used that wire when I did my remote start, just cant remember at the moment. I think its a green/white wire but I want to check to make sure.

Thumbs up

I checked all four wires with a voltmeter and also decided that green/white was the most likely. I wired it up and hit the road with the new camper Friday evening. Everything seems to be working perfectly.

Where did you get the controller and how much if you don't mind me asking? And could you please give me a little detail on the install. I need to put one in this month before I tow my 40 all the way to Coos Bay, and I'm still a little foggy on the best way to do it.

I was think that all I would have to do is run 1 wire from the controller and make a way to directly connect it to the brake wire on the trailer. I would like to keep my flat 4 plug in if posible, so I'd just have something basic to connect the two wires together.

Thanks for any info!

I paid $99 from RJays Speed Shop, www.rjays.com, for the controller plus an extra $15 for their generic wiring kit. I was very happy with the generic kit - it had all the necessary wires in the right colors, sizes and lengths as well as various crimp connectors and the necessary fuses. I could have done without it, but saved a bunch of time having it all together like that.

First I picked up a 4-to-7 converter from Walmart. It plugs directly into the existing 4-pin plug and gives you both a 7 and a 4 pin output, then it has a pigtail with the other three wires ending in a crimp connectors. I mounted it to the existing bracket on the Reese hitch.

Using the wire from RJays and a fish tape, I snaked the brake wire from the back up the inside of the frame rail to an existing hole in the frame approximately under the drivers seat. From there I followed the brake lines up the firewall. I connected the power wire to the main terminal in the engine compartment fuse box and the ground to the battery ground up front. Then I routed all three of these wires through an existing rubber grommet on the firewall which brings them out just above the drivers side kick panel.

I mounted the controller bracket to the inside fuse panel cover with two screws, routed the wiring under the dash and crimped it all together. I stuffed the slack wire behind the kick panel.

All total it only took about two hours to complete - it turned out to be easier than I thought once I figured out where I wanted to route the wire from the front to the back.

The next project will be to connect the other two pins in the 7-wire: the 12v AUX and the reverse lights.

Sweet man. Thanks for the info. I'll hopefully be starting this project in the next few weeks.
