Question 2 Questions

Frist the easy question: What should I use to seal up my rear 3RD member. For it is leaking? :pat:

Second: I'm going to do an SAS :welder on my runner with coil front and rear. Dose anyone have any idea what I would be looking at spending. I'm guess around $3,000 Installed.

O ya one otherthing, Corey and other in the eashington area, We need to do a big run before the summer is over. I was thinking Brown's Camp or Naches

Where is it leaking? At the pinion or at the axle housing?

Why coils? It's been proven to be more expensive to setup properly and you don't get anything over leafs front/rear.

I want to do Coil becouse I think (and this is a personal thing) that they look and ride a little bit better. my last runner had leaf on it and it road like a German tank. (was about as stong too)

The leak somewhere where the 3RD member bolt to the axel house. I think. I have grease coming off the the axel houseing and that is the only place that i can think of that it is coming from.

Sorry Washington

Keep in mind that not all leaf springs are created equal. "German tank" ride sounds like something NWOR would sell...

Check to make sure it's not the breather that it's coming out of. If so you'll want to change out the gear oil as you might have water in the axle or it's simply overfilled.

If it's indeed leaking between the third and axle housing here's what to do:
  • block front wheels, put rear axle on jack stands and remove wheels
  • drain gear oil from axle, remove the fill plug first to be sure you can refill later
  • disconnect parking brake cable and service brake hydraulic lines, plug hard lines or crimp rubber hose to save brake fluid
  • remove 4 nuts on both ends of axle housing at brake backing plate
  • carefully pull both brake drum / axle assemblies out of axle housing and set aside, you'll need about half the truck's width of room on either side so check this before starting if doing this in a garage
  • remove 10(?) nuts from third and carefully remove third member, watch out because it's quite heavy
  • thoroughly clean both sealing surfaces and apply a bead of RTV on sealing surface of axle housing, I recommend the black RTV
  • reassembly is reverse, don't forget to bleed the brakes once done

You can/should also put a bead of RTV on the bearing retainers when you reinstall the axle assemblies, watch for the big o-rings to see where I'm talking about. While you're in there you might as well replace both inner axle seals, and if either wheel bearing is getting loose now would be the best time to replace it. It's not always easy however, some people have been lucky but I've never gotten one off without cutting it... Let us know if you need any more info or any torque values.

Thanks I know how to take it all part I just wasn't sure what to use as sealer when I put it back together. As I'm thinking about there is a good possible that there is water in the Diff. I had a pretty nasty water cross a few weeks back and haven't had time to change the fliud Bad me :pat:
Thanks
