Friend has a 2.7 Tacoma 5sp that I've driven many times. Definately a very capable truck. Has done very well with everything we've thrown at it. The only downfalls are passing on the freeway (going uphill) and hauling/towing. For those reasons, I am very glad that I have my 3.4. Even with the auto transmission, it feels so much better and hauls with ease. It's well worth the 2-3mpg handicap.
Even if I were to do it over again, I would go with the 3.4. Auto or 5 sp, you can't go wrong.

I've driven all types. And I have to admit I like the 2.7 with a 5spd. I would take a 2.7 over an older 3.0 any day. Just no comparison there. That being said, I own a 3.4 5spd. Not a big fan of any of the automatics and I would rather have a 5spd behind either engine. A 2.7 5spd truck would be a great daily driver. I'm in need of a new pickup. The 4runner is great but sometimes you need a truck. I'm considering getting a 2.7 5spd for that purpose.

I've had my 2.7 for 3 1/2 years, and contrary to what everyone is saying, (sorry to be that guy) I wish I'd waited around for a 3.4. I get decent gas mileage, yes, but, I can't stand the fact that I can't maintain 65mph uphill without double downshifting to third. I'd trade the 3mpg difference for the horsepower difference in a second. I'd go 3.4.

i've had both the 2.7 and 3.4 and i've liked both engines. 3.4 has more power but the 2.7 is suprisingly strong as well. the 2.7 has quite a bit of torque, and gets 3-5 miles a gallon better. like stated before the 2.7 has a timing chaing and requires less maintenence. both are a definite stepup from the 22r/e and 3.slow.
I second that.
the 2.7 w/ 5speed in my tacoma had enough power with stock tires... with oversize tires it was drastically underpowered
the 3.4 w/ auto in my 4runner I like much better. I would like a manual but the auto is not bad. the ECT button helps control shift timing if i want some more oommf. Fuel mileage.... depends how you drive. "normal" driving, without much hard acceleration I get about 16-20mpg with the 3.4. Upwards of 20mpg on the highway. the 2.7 wasn't much better, as quoted.

Food for thought
I have had a 90 4Runner for about 8 years with a 22re and 5 speed tranny. I was bummed about the pick up on steep grades and freeway driving. I threw in a 268 torqr cam from engnbldr, and have had increased pick up. You have to run the valves a little tighter according to his specs, but between 2800-3200 rpm, my engine jumps into a sweet spot--I can cruise uphill in 4th at 65mph.
I am looking at a 99 Taco 2.7L 5-speed today. I thought that I wanted to get a 3.4 for the added ponies, but in the end, I think the reliability and cheaper maintenance of the 2.7 is the way to go.
Unfortunately Engnbldr doesn't make any parts for the 3RZ, but LCE Engineering has a bunch of components to help you get the 2.7 doing more for ya.

the 2.7 is more rare than the 3.4 in the 4x4 trucks, i have a 2.7 in mine totally stock and have had it on the bumpstops hauling stuff and it did fine. and i must mention that it doesnt eat oil like some engines. great engine imho i think toyota really nailed it with this one. and dont let the manifold issue get to you, im almost at 200k and its perfectly intact.
altho sometimes i like to race duramax's and it does lack a little power.

i love my 2.7 in my tacoma. i bought the truck brand new in 2000. i have 442000 miles on it and never had the valve cover off of it. been a great truck. the only issue i have with it is the knock sensor code. still working on that.
