I've got an 86 4Runner and I'm looking at some later 90's tacomas. One of the ones I like is a 95 2.7 5 spd. with 142,000 miles. It runs really well and it's quiet. Does anyone have a 2.7 or know of any problems they are prone to having? Also can these go 250-300,000 miles like the 22re or would I be beter off with a 3.4? Paul

 

I think the 2.7L is a good engine. I haven't had any complaints. I bought my truck maybe 3 years ago. I have about 127,000 miles on it and it runs like new-not unusual for a Toyota though. I have had to fix nothing on it. My coworker has a 98 Tacoma 2.7L with 135,000 miles on his-runs great. He finally put belts on it last week. It's hard to go wrong with a 4 cylinder. I think if you like the 22R, you will like the 2.7L.

 

I have a 2.7 in my coma, The motor has run stong so far with 107k on it, But Ive also had a valve job and a bad injector replaced. It was done under warranty. The biggest problem I have is the Catalytic converter, I have a California truck in New England and to get inspected I can not have a Check engine light on. California trucks come with 2 converters and I can pay $1000. for ea. to fix the problem.
Anyway its decent. If you live outside of Cal. make sure its not from there!

 

Is there anyone else with a 2.7 out there with anything to add? I heard a 2.7 with a stick is pretty peppy....The one I test drove seemd pretty slow, but I guess it is a 4 cylinder.

 

I have a 2.7 with about 170,000. no problems so far, ran it with moblile one synthetic since it was bought, decent power for a 4 cylinder but passing can be an annoyance though. if you hammer it, you'll get through. runs like new...

 

I love my 2.7. Its really a good engine. I bought mine with 126XXX and it still feels new. I flog it whenever I drive and it performs better than my friends V6 Ranger. well, thats not too impressive seein as the 2.7 is a toyota and the V6 is a ford.

 

Yea no kidding my 86 4runner with a 22re passes up ford rangers with ease. When is the timing belt usually supposed to be done on those 60k?

The Dealer told me there is no timing chain. All computer.

 

No such thing in any Toyota truck as computer operated valves.

Having had both (22R and 2.7, as well as the 3.4 I have now) I think the 2.7 is the heir apparent to the 22R. It is a great engine, especially with a stick. The only place you'll feel it is when towing or hauling up a big hill. Other than that, no worries!

From what I have read (here I think), the 2.7L is a beefed up version of the 22RE? Correct me if I'm wrong because I really don't know.

 

I've taken a 2.7L apart.... as far as durability, I'm not sure specifically, but this engine has not one, not two, but three timing chains it sure is fun timing them! :pat:

 

The manual I looked at shows a number one and number two timing chain.No number three.

 

 

I don't know how much the older 22re is to the newer 2.4L 2rz-fe, but the 2rz-fe and the 2.7L 3rz-fe seem to have a lot in common. Was wondering where the 3rd chain is also????

i believe that the 2rz and 3rz use the same head, and the bore is the same, the blocks are much different between the two, the 3rz has two balance shafts, which are on each side of the crank, (they are driven by the 2nd timing chain), while the 2rz block is more like the 22r in design
