Since i bought my 3RZ Tacoma about 25k miles ago it has always had a couple intermittent problems, and now its surging/rough idle is getting more constant.

The problem only occurs after i have been driving (usually on the highway) and i take out the clutch to coast, my idle will dip down to ~400 then up to ~1000 and do this a number of times until i rev the engine then it idles normally. It has recently started doing this more often and actually killed my truck when i stopped while exiting off the highway. I believe if I can find the source of this problem I will be able to find the rough idle as well.

A separate but possibly related problem is occasional power loss up hills, it becomes gutless with any incline at highway speeds. Again this is intermittent and sometimes can go up the same hills with no problems.

Any ideas?

 

No ideas? it died again today on my way home from work

 

AIC or TPS would be a good place to start. Fuel filter been replaced at all?

Any CEL codes?

 

I just rebuilt the top part of the motor and physically inspected the IAC and ohm'd the TPS and they both looked good. I replaced the fuel filter about 5k miles ago as well.

 

My bet is IAC, even if it still looks pretty cute
