1st post + tire fitment question
Hey guys, my name is John and I've been lurking on this board for a couple of months, now. It's already been very helpful already in answering a lot of my noob questions and I really appreciate it. I live in Nebraska and am pretty fresh to 4wd stuff. I'd like to think of myself as mechanically inclined so feel free to be as technical as you want.
I hate to start another tire fitment thread because I know that there are ususally about 6 going at once so I'll try to make this one pretty straightforward.
I have an 81 4x4 pickup that is my daily driver when the weather gets cold and is good for some fun when it rains. I will be buying new wheels and tires sooner rather than later and needed your opinions on what should fit. Will a 33x12.5 MT/R fit along w/ a 15x10 steelie on 3 3/4" backspacing in the stock wheelwell? The truck sits at stock height but I spent maybe 1/2 an hour w/ a tape measure the other day and to my untrained eye they should fit fine. It rides like a dumptruck right now and it looked like the few inches of clearance I would have should be plenty. Will they rub on stuff on the inside? I know they would stick out quite a bit which doesn't bother me really. If anyone could recommend some (cheap) fender flares that would be extremely helpful, though. Would a 32x11.5 on a 15x8 steelie on 3 3/4" backspacing be a better alternative?
I know re-gearing would be ideal but the truck very rarely sees the interstate. I'll get around to it someday but not this month. I just saw in another thread that 4" backspacing is pushing it and I also wanted to make sure I understood that straight. I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me already. Thanks again.
Cliffnotes = Will 33's fit on a stock 81 pickup?

[81 4x4 pickup.. Will a 33x12.5 MT/R fit along w/ a 15x10 steelie on 3 3/4" backspacing in the stock wheelwell? ]
Nope. With 15x8s maaaybe, only if you want to cruise the mall and never turn sharp.
[Would a 32x11.5 on a 15x8 steelie on 3 3/4" backspacing be a better alternative?]
That should fit. It will probably rub a bit only at full turn and stuff when offroad, but only barely.
You probably can't get 4" backspacing to fit. It'll rub the tie rod ends.
