Question 1st Gen Seatbelts

I know I've read somewhere that you can put shoulder belts in for the back seats of a 1st gen. If so, what would fit? Has anybody done this? Any safety issues/concerns? I ask because two of my kids just went to booster seats and they can't ride with me anymore since there aren't any shoulder belts in the rear. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

It can be done. The roll bar has bolt holes under the rubber and plastic covers which can receive should belts. Some people have just grabbed belts from parts trucks or 2nd gens. The only concerns are possibly retapping the threads, having to add retractable lap belts in a non-SR5, and length issues. I have never seen or heard of any 1st gen coming with belts though that is the purpose of the holes according to a parts guy at a dealer here. The belts themselves may or may not be available at the dealer if you want OEM, but they would obvioulsy be expensive.

Try to check JC WHITNEY they usually have alot of generic stuff that will fit ,but might not be exact oem match. I would also like to put shoulder belts in the rear. Let me know if you find any good sources. thanks GUMBO.

Find a standard cab '84-'88 pickup with the right color interior. The belts (get the bolts, etc. too) from that truck will bolt right up to the backseat mounts on your 4Runner, they did on mine. Total cost: $20 and ½ hour time.

Keep in mind that you can get creative with the existing lab belts, swap them around as needed for length. Also, If you want retractable belts and have a non -SR5, you will need SR5 side panels or you'll have to cut squares out of your existing panels since the retracor springs are mounted to the side.

toy 283, are the front truck belts not identical to the 4runner belts?

The standard cab truck retractor assembly is mounted outside of the body panels and has a plastic cover that is the same color as the interior trim. Xtra Cab belts are similar to 4Runner belts, the retractor assembly is hidden. Dunno about SR5 belts being inside the panels. The rollbar has both necessary holes for the retractor assembly as well as the upper mount.
