1st gen passenger door handles

so i've been driving my 4runner for over a month now and my girlfriend just noticed something earlier today. the passenger side door has TWO door handles on the inside, both of which open the door. why is that?

I think it is for the back passenger. So that person can open the door from the back. That is the only reason I can ponder.

The one furthest back is for the backseat people, so that they can reach it.... thats my theory

Have you ever noticed the foot release on the back of the passenger seat?
The could be related.

i like the foot release. i think that's an excellent idea for ANY 2-door vehicle. i've only seen them on toyotas as of yet. it's a pain when you're in the back and the passenger doesn't release you from your prison. same way with my celica. ANOTHER EXCELLENT idea from the boys over at toyota.
