I'm new to this forum and looking for some assistance. I have a 99 4 Runner that shakes like hell when I hit the breaks, I have my buddy check the calipers to see if they were worped, the manual said they should measure .003, mine measure .002, didn't seem to be enough to create such a violent shake in the steering wheel when I hit the breaks. We threw it up on the jack stands, locked the steering wheel and gave each front wheel a good side to side shake, quite a bit of play it seemed, so with that said, if anyone has come accross this already, any idea as to what it is, maybe there is a way to adjust the steering rack without replacing it? Any assistance is appreciated, so thank you in advance for your advice.

 

It probably doesn't have anything to do with your steering rack. How many miles are on the truck? When was the last time the brakes were serviced?

It is probably warped rotors, calibers don't exactly warp. Give us more info about the truck.

 

What were you measuring? Thickness or out of round?

Sounds like you need rotors, do a search here, loads of info on that. Brembo rotors worked awesome for me.

As far as steering, when you shook the tires, was the rack moving in the bushings? If so, this is a common problem with 3rd gen trucks, the solution is poly bushings, available from 4wheelparts or wheelers (i think). Lots of info here for that as well. Check the tech section for a writeup.

 

Sounds like your rotors are done. Also, if you had the truck up on jackstand and shook the front tires/wheels and there was play you might want to check your tie-rods.

 

x3 what they said. You have to check roundness, not thickness. And you also have to check the rotor, not the brake caliper.
