1997 4Runner Roof Rack(track?) Issues? Anyone?

Alright, so I'm a newby...But why have I had such an issue finding just the tracks on a roof rack for a 1997 4Runner?? I bought this truck with just the plastic roof strips ready to mount the tracks, but every salvage yard wants to sell me the "whole luggage rack" for $200+ (thats even if they understand what I'm talking about). I finally ordered what's called the "outer skid strip" on ToyotaParts4u.com and am waiting on them in the mail. I think this may be the answer but, has anyone had a problem with this or is it just me? I hate to be impatient but I have a great THULE rack that should just click in to these. KAYAK season is approaching!! I need to get my boat and bikes up!!

Thanks- I love this forum!!

Yakama sells rails for the 4Runner. I have not seen them but they may be just like the stock metal ones. Something to look into. Check at a specialty rack store.

You have trouble finding the parts because most dealers/parts guys won't take the time to look up the actual part number as opposed to looking up the entire roof rack assembly. At the time, the part number was #00278-96042, but again, that was probably 6 years ago now.

I got mine several years ago from toyotaparts4u.com for $24 ea, IIRC.

Thanks- Thats exactly the part number I ordered from ToyotaParts4U, except now they're $31. Oh well... inflation. At least I'm getting somewhere!! - Thanks again.

Yeah, both Yakima and Thule sell universal tracks meant to be bolted to roofs.
