does the tranny in a 1988 v6 4runner last just as long as one in a 22re? And what are some sympoms to look for if the tranny is going bad?

 

The R150 found in the 88 4Runner has stronger internals than the W56 found in the 4cy. Both are excellent transmissions and should last the life of the vehicle if taken care of properly.

Usually a bad tranny will make noises. Grinding, ticking, banging. Popping out of gear on its own. Things like that. You can usually tell when something has gone wrong with the trans by pulling the magnetic drain plug and looking for stuff stuck to it.

What problems are you having?

 

umm none really i was just checking, sometimes it seems a little harder then it should be to get in gear but i think its just me. Or if your cruising to a stop and go to put it in first while still rolling sometimes it seems harder. THis was on a car i was test driving but like i said i think its just how its supposed to feel.

 

Is there anything you should do at 200k to the tranny like reflush the fluid or somethign else?

 

I dont think you really need to "flush" the tranny like you would on a automatic trans. A 5 speed takes regular GL5 gear oil, just drain and fill. Do the same with the t-case.

 

never done it before so i was curois how often you do this?

 

don't put GL5 in there, use a good GL4 like redline MT90. GL5 is too "slippery" and will cause notchy shifts.
