its a 4 banger with auto tranny...yea i know but what can i do?
its a slug i know but it drives fine...my question is, when o the highway it really struggles or not struggle, it makes to much effor to get to simply 70. anything over that i step on the gas and the RPM goes up to like 4 and making a "grrrrrrrrrrr" sound, what coudl this be?????? or are these auto 4runners really that slugish?

depends... could be any number of things... if its at a relatively low rpm and then jumps with no increase, i would look to see if its torque convertor slippage.....
how is its maintenacne? tune-up? and tranny problems: hard to shift, clunks?

non o, the rpm jumps only when i step on the gas...
no clunks, no slips, drives great man! just when i get on the highway it picks up fine, just when you wanna go faster and step on the gas.....rpm goes up when accelerating........

How big are your tires?
I don't care if you say stock or if you sy 35's, I'm gonna tell you the same thing.........
GEAR LOWER
I think that is the most surefire way to get a little more grunt. That is considering you're sure the motor and tranny are functioning fine.
You could do headers, intake, exahust and piping, plus some sort of ignition upgrade...but they need to be used together to actually see and sizeable gain. There's always more aggressive cams, but then you sacrifice gas mileage and reliability. Even these thing don't really make that big a difference. So gearing, yeah, gearing.

ok good point there....
its got a 3inch lift with 31's on there, wanted to put 33 but now that you mentioned it, i was wanting to add on everything you just said except headers, im in cali so smog issues are not very flexibble...

I have an '87 runner with the auto transmission. Mine acted the same exact way on the freeway when I had 31x10.50s tires...got slightly worse with 33x12.50s. After rebuilding and spending a good sum of cash on my motor my truck now accelerates when I floor it on the freeway. However, I think gearing (which I haven't done yet) would probably be a cheaper way to utilize the power you have (or don't have with these engines ). I plan on moving to 4.88s as soon as I can lick my wounds from this rebuild.
As far as headers go, I believe LC engineering's header is smog legal in Cali. Might want to check into that. I think a header is a very good investment for these motors and probably the mod that really opens up the most power. Opening up the rest of the exhaust with some 2.25" tubing and a nicer muffler certainly helps as well.
