Hi folks, I am a new member and I have a question or two about my 85 truck. I currently have it taken apart to replace the broken plastic chain guide. My question regards the Air Suction system and whether or not I need it or not. I have read other posts and there seem to be some tree huggers out there, but where I live, there are no vehicle inspections and my converter has been off for about 10 years. My engine is the 22R, so no computer, no O2 sensors, etc. I would like to put a block off plate on the exhaust manifold where the tubes bolted up. Has any one had experience with this? I know a header would not have this provision, so I am thinking I can live without the extra tubes and hoses. It would sure make changing the oil filter a lot easier too! Any help would be appreciated.

 

If you like having power brakes, you need the vaccum system.

 

How does this exhaust suction thing have any effect on my power brakes? That was a totally different vacuum line.

 

i dont believe it has anything to do with the brakes.

correct me if im wrong but the line you are speaking of is a steel line that has two inlets above the exhaust manifold that run back to the egr or carb i believe. the purpose is to take some of the exhaust gases and recirculate them through the engine to burn off some pollutants and stuff...right???

you would not be able to pass smog without it but it doesnt sound like that is a problem for you, im jealous

you would need to plug the holes in the exhaust manifold and as long as it runs fine there shouldnt be any problems except for the gaping hole in the ozone above the town you live in...

 

I took it off my 87 with efi. and havent had a problem, just had to plug the extra hole on the air cleaner.

 

Those steel lines DO NOT go to the carburetor. Those pipes are connetced to a one way reed valve that lets fresh air into the exhaust, cooling, stabalizing, and cleaning the exhaust flow.
I only know this because I bought the factory maint. books about a year and a half ago. And I had to replace the engine, so I educated myself on all of the emmisions systems.
