170k = too much?

Looking at buying a 1998 tacoma. 4wd std cab short box model with the 4 cylinder and 5 speed. Problem is it has 170,000 miles and I have no experience with these 4-bangers, do they normally last a long time? I know its nothing for a 22r(e), but not sure. Input?

the 3rz is a long lasting engine.

the only problems they are known for is for the older ones to crack the exhaust manifold and the rear main seal might leak on you.

so a new exhaust manifold and an oil leak are the biggest issues? Truck obviously doesn't have a cracked manifold and doesn't appear to leak oil.

147,??? on my 96 x-cab. My manifold is cracked right now, just haven't bothered with it yet. I just noticed it a cpl months ago. Other than that, the truck has been perfect. I expect to run this truck for several more years without a problem.

the 2.7 is the new 22R. I would love to find one to throw in my '81.
Do the usual compression check, fluid checks, pull wheels to check the brakes...etc

Yeah man, what everyone else has been saying...I'm at 146k in a 4x4 auto and its been very good to me so far. I had the exhaust leak but no problems other than that. Mine still runs strong as can be man...matted to the 5spd should give you plenty of miles.
