03 hitch question

Have any of the other 03 owners had this problem? I tried the hitch that came with my truck and it wouldn't fit. They are replacing it, but I was just curious if anybody else had this problem?

Momo75,

What didn't fit? I just ordered that hitch receiver for my 03 Hilux.

My understanding is that all you get from Toyota is a standard two inch receiver that you need to insert the receiver hitch into.

This was a problem in the beginning, there were posts about it over on Edmunds (spit). Go bad to your dealer and have them replace it. I made my sales guy check before I signed anything.

Are you talking about the drop hitch bar? I didnt know Toyota was including them with the towing package, are they on the 4th gens?

yep, they are included. Not that I have to tow anything, but one day I just tried it and it would not slide in....heheheh.....this isn't the first time that it has been too big....lol Anyway, the dealership said they had to replace a couple of them already. Now I just have to find something to tow.

I know this post is old, but I figured I would keep it going since I just found out I have the same problem. Just tried the hitch in the receiver yesterday and it wouldn't fit. Went to dealer and the hitch slid into a few other 4Runner receivers with no problem. So, looks like they are going to have to replace the receiver, but, they haven't decided what to do yet until they talk to the service guy that had fixed one once before (he wasn't there today).

I got my Runner on Jan 5th, so if anybody out there still hasn't tried their receiver/hitch, they may want to.

I'm still not sure what you guys mean by not fitting. Is the ball mount to long and hitting the spare tire? The receiver is a standard Class III 2 inch receiver and any 2x2 inch square mount should work.

Heres another thread.

I guess that's why the service guy didn't know what I was talking about at first. It is suppose to be a standard Class III part, but something happened, maybe in manufacturing. The bar that the ball mounts to that slides into the receiver does not fit. On mine, it looks like the receiver is too small, as the hitch would fit in other receivers. It is possible to get 3 sides in, but the 4th side hits the front of the receiver and wont slide. It just barely hits, and a little grind would work, but I don't want them machining any of the trailering parts. The service guy thought maybe there was a burr or something there, but it was clean and smooth. Hope that clears it up some. Guess a pic would be ideal.

I had to order the hitch receiver part from Toyota for mine and I got a new Class III 2x2 chrome ball mount the other day and it slid right in .

If you look at the other thread, I have a pic posted of my receiver-minus the ball mount.

Just go to the service department and show them. That is what I did and they ordered me another that fit and didn't give me any problems about it.

Thanks... I actually went back out there and made it fit... After I put it in and out a few times, it started fitting better. No need for a trip now!

It looks like it just was not finished well.

What size shank does it require (keep it clean ... )? Mine requires a 1-1/4" shank on the ball, so I replaced it with one that would fit the 1" shanks we already had.
