'03 4Runner Borla Dual Exhaust

I figured I would start a new thread

My question is, to those who have it...how does it sound? I have a magnaflow muffler on mine now and it sounds deep and throaty, which i like...at one point i would maybe like to get the borla, just wanted to know if it sounds just as good. Also, where did you purchase the exhaust? Directly from Borla? Or are there other places that may have it cheaper...thanks for the info

I haven't heard one, but I have seen one and it looked pretty good. Every once in a while I have seen them on e-bay. Of course if you go throught the dealership, you will.....for lack of a better phrase.....take it up the tailpipe.:pat:

Good looking truck...

Which Magnaflow are you using ?

I am guessing you just had a muffler shop weld one in... did you go with a nice tailpipe ?

Thanks,

David

An exhaust shop here quoted me $300 for a dual Magnaflow exhaust but I was going to wait so I didn't void any of my warranty. Did you notice any difference after you installed the maganaflow, besides the sound?

I think Performance Products has the Borla exhaust for about $800....

You need to get you front windows tinted to match. Here is what it looks like.

Talking of Borla, I had really bad experiences with a Borla on my '96.

I had a single Cat system so replaced the CAT back with a Borla from PP.

The thing droned like an SOB right at 55 mph cruising. I complained and they send me a resonator cone that I had to have welded in the pipe myself.

That brilliant fix moved the reasonance up 300 rpm to around 65 mph . great !

Eventually, I got my money back.

I have a TRD Cat back on my 99 dual cat and that thing is perfect to my mind. Great balance between a better sound and not too loud. I am sure the dual cat helps that.

Looks are pretty sweet also.

I would have to hear one on an '03 V8 before I dropped $800

I believe i got the 5"x8", 20" overall - 14" muffler and yeah, i got a stainless tip put on. It is throaty, but not too loud for me...it sounds like i am driving a 5.0 mustang...lol. I really wanted to get a second pipe put out the rear on the driver side but was told there wasnt enough room, but now that i see borla is making a dual pipe system that fits the '03, i am curious why i couldnt get mine done like that...so i either go back to the guy and let him know about borla's cat back or i look into gettin the borla at one point

No warranties are voided on the exhaust that I know of, so i think you are pretty much safe with that. As far as performance, i guess i felt a little more pickup, but not that much...i ultimately wanted to just hear the V8 as you should...not the quiet stock system thats on there.

Did you get your front windows tinted by toyota? if so..how much?

I got them done at a place here in town. It is a place that has done several on my friends' cars so I knew they did a good job and would match it as close as possible. I think for just those 2 windows, it was about $30, but I can't really remember. Besides the look it really helps on the heat, especially this time of year here in the south.:beach:

The 3rd gen folks had really good success with this muffler from flowmaster.

From the description, it looks a better fit for the V8 than the V6.

You can find details on the borla at www.borla.com

Product is linked here

Kinda strange that the V6 and V8 have the same part number .... perhaps we are talking a 100% cosmetic exercise here ?

Anyone know if the TRD headers for the Tundra will fit the 4th gen?

I was looking on Performance Products website, saw the borla but kept sayin not available for 2003 4runner...do you have a link by any chance?

Also, did you get that quote with them lookin at your 4runner? and split pipe out the rear or split side? I only ask because I got an explanation that a pipe couldnt fit on the other side with the spare tire there...i really really really wanted split pipes out the rear...lol...as you can see

Yep, he actaully had a guy come in the week before with an '03 that had the Borla exhaust installed, but wanted it louder. He said the tips would have to turn out instead of going straight out the back.

One thing that makes me think the side exits would be better...even know i like the pipe out the rear look, but i think with the pipes out the side, maybe less exhaust/egg smell would come in the back window when its open...or maybe not

Unfortunately they don't. I'm already working with Downey so they can build a new header. The problem is that for the tundra the headers flare out while the 4runner flares in (or it might be backwards...) something like that. They took a quick look when they were taking measurements for the suspension and the intake and they noticed that they'd have to build a new header.

Not sure when the headers will be out though as they said that they might have to relocate the cat conv back a few inches.... Guess I won't know for awhile...

sorry

Thanks Lance.

I'm sure someone will come out with some headers. Maybe Borla or Thorley.
