I think I experienced a locked up torque converter clutch on my wife's 01 4runner limited but when the dealer looked at it all was fine with no codes. Here is what happened:

Had been driving on interstate for about an hour, when I pulled off to get a bite to eat engine sputtered and died as I stopped. When trying to start, engine died when shifting to Drive or Reverse. Only way I was able to get it to dealership was to start in neutral, shift to 1st gear and give it gas. Shifted fine once I got it going, just had to remember to put it in neutral when I started slowing down for a red light. Made it to the dealer but when they looked at it all was fine and no codes were set. They said it sounded like a locked TC but said that would have set a diagnostic code.

Any ideas on what could have caused this? Its my wife's car and there's no way I'm letting her drive it until I know its fixed. thanks

Dealer thinks it was the torque converter that locked up. Said because no codes were set, the problem was with the torque converter itself and not the solenoid or hydraulic valve. Can anyone confirm dealer conclusions? thanks
