also, can any of you fine gentlemen provide me with some insight on gearing? i'm ordering 33" general grabbers next month and need to change my gearing so my auto trans doesn't bog my engine down to 1k rpm and 2mpg. my VIN code is G292 which translates to 8"open diff with 4.10 gears. i have a 4 spd auto with overdrive. i have searched EVERYWHERE both on this site and on others for advice. i can find plenty on jeeps (puke) and toys with manual trannies. the most popular option i found was going to 4.88's with 33"s and a 5spd manual. however, i was thinking more along the lines of 4.56 with my auto + overdrive. can any of you offer a bit of insight? i want to send off my diffs to marlin crawler next month to have them rebuilt. grizzly in the back and a spartan in the front. thanks!

5.29s and don't look back. Autos generally require one-level higher gear than manuals for the same size tire, and it's generally accepted to run 4.88s with 33s and a 5-speed.

Yeah? Do you think I'd still be able to do around 65mph on the freeway? Hell, you'd definitely know more about this than I would. If I could keep it below 3k rpm in overdrive at 65mph I'd be stoked. 5.29s would give me some insane crawl numbers too. Now I'm intrigued...

had to replace the driver's rear shock this weekend. It came loose on the trail and was bent by the axle housing traveling up and down. it's the little things that always wreak havoc...if i would have only checked the torque on that bolt.

Grizzly locker equipped third member ordered today! should be in the mail within a week. Can't wait! Now I need to order bigger tires...thinking General Grabber 33x10.50r15 to prevent excess rubbing and rolling weight. Then after I sell my current tires I'm going to get the front differential, spartan equipped of course!!!

wow it's been a while since i've uploaded anything! i'm going to put up some pics tonight of Moab, Utah. i went out there a week ago and ran Sevenmile Rim and Fins n' Things to test out the rig! with front and rear lockers it crawled like a tractor. simply impressive. i loved watching all the Jeepers struggle haha.

Thanks man! Yep, 5.29s front and back. Grizzly locker in the rear and a spartan in the front with Yukon gears. It ran the trails with ease and crawled at 2mph at 2500 rpm! Tons of low-end torque with the new gear ratio.

Cool, thanks. I am new to this; just wondering why there are different lockers front and back?

Honestly it's just a matter of preference. IMO, if you're not using electronic or air lockers then I suggest you put a more expensive mechanical locker in the rear. The grizzly was roughly twice the cost of the spartan so it allows for a more comfortable ride around town and on the highway. Considering I only engage the front diff at very low speeds, it can click and clack all it wants and it won't bother me.

Ok, thanks for the replies!
