I have a 1986 4runner sr5 with 22re automatic transmission with stock gears and 33x12.5 bfg m/t. Im gettin 11mpg and cant get over 70 on freeway. Should I regear it? If not what should I do to improve my mileage?

33's are pretty darn big for the stock gears. But without knowing the overall condition of your truck, it's really hard to say. Some people could have stock tires and not be getting better mileage or speed, if it isn't running properly.

Gears would help, but also make sure it's in good running condition...tune-up etc.

 

If I'm not mistaken, with 33" tires, you should have at least 4:56 gearing, possibly 4:88.

I was thinking about 4.88 gears. Also my truck is in good condition the body has 193,xxx original miles and the engine and tranny were rebuilt and swapped 30,xxx miles ago.

My gear code is G282 so I have 8" 4.300 gears and 2 pinion open diff.

Thank you Hunt21286! The link you posted was very helpful. I think im gonna go with 4.88 gears or maybe 5.29 in case i decide to get 35's in the future. Whats your guy's opinions?

 

with an auto trans, 5.29s with the 35"s will probably make you happier, give you the power you're wishing you had now. 4.88s were the option with 31s, so if you jump up to 35s you'll feel that same sluggishness you're unhappy with now.

keep in mind that with the auto, you don't have 5th gear, so you'll be at higher RPMs when cruising at 60+. so your engine will be working harder. if you're not typically a highway cruiser, then this may not matter to you.

 

I have an auto with 4.56s and 33s and it's ridiculously tall....I can cruise at 80mph just over 2500 rpms. With 5.29s I'd be going about 70mph just over 2500rpms. That's reasonable for 33s and might even be a little tall for 35s.

 

31" tires were not the only determining factor in which gear ratio was used. My '90 (sig) came with 31s and 4.56s.

Incorrect.

A340 (auto) 4th gear is .71:1
W56 (manual) 5th gear is .85:1

A340, 4.56s, 33s @ 65mph = approx. 2150 rpms
W56, 4.56s, 33s @ 65mph = approx 2550 rpms

The A340 will actually cruise at much lower RPMs in 4th than the W56 will in 5th. Yes the A340 only has 4 gears, but they're wider.

 

Yes you need to regear.

So with the 33's that are on it i should get 5.29 gears?
That way I'll be able to get 35's in the future if I want to.

I can't get as technical as some of these other guys, but, I've run an automatic 4runner on 33's with both the 4.30 factory gears and 5.29's. I feel that 5.29's were perfect for the auto/33's combo. I was able to chirp the tires on occasion as well as easily do 75mph on the freeway in o/d.

 

I would run at least 5.29s with the 22re/automatic. If you plan on upgrading to 35s, you may want to consider 5.71s. Your setup would look like this in 4th gear (overdrive):

33s & 5.29s @ 65mph = 2485rpms
35s & 5.29s @ 65mph = 2343rpms

33s & 5.71s @ 65mph = 2683rpms
35s & 5.71s @ 65mph = 2529rpms

 

im running 31s w 456s and wish id gone w 488s

 

I agree with this. 5.29's don't seem low enough to provide much grunt with the 22re/auto and 35's. 5.71's would be the ticket.

 

Hey Buckshot----I'm with Deathtrap and BMcEL on this one....I had a 1987 Runner with 22RE and Auto....I had the skinny 33x10.50 tires and installed my own 571 gears(of course) and that was the ticket for me The autos have such a great overdrive and the 22RE is a bit low on horsepower so 571 seems like the choice. On the highway, I had my GPS showing 75mph and my odometer said 3400.....not bad for 75. On the trail, I was unstoppable with my rear Detroit and real gearing. I had myself a real "sleeper" if you know what I mean. Go for the gusto


Here's a few pics of my ole 87....I cranked the torsion bars for 1.5" lift in front....a center coil in the rear for 4" lift ....a full detroit in the rear....and 571 gears. That balanced out my street/highway with my trail use. I left the heavy awkward fiberglass factory top off all of its life with me....the people that sat in the back seat got the greatest offroad view of all.

my first point above was only that if the tallest gears Toyota put in with 31s was 4.88, then bigger than 31s would need taller than 4.88. 5.29 at the least.

my 2nd point was comparing RPMs of the auto with 5.29s vs. the manual with 4.88s with same tire size.

apologies everyone if i was confusing there.

but i think we're suggesting the same thing, that he's going to want 5.29s at least. 5.71s are being suggested, but i was thinking that would put his cruising RPMs even higher, and just to keep it in mind.



i think i'll clam up on answering auto tranny questions.
