So i just recently traded a civic i bought for 500 bucks for a 90 4runner SR5 5speed. Its sitting on Hankook Dynapro mt 35/12.5/15 with a 3 inch body lift. the rear end is locked and im hoping its not welded. the 3.0 thats in it blew the head gaskets and hydrolocked the motor. the guy i bought it from included a 22r and tranny with 2 tc. The plan was to swap those in and have a running runner. after thinking ive decided not to put the 22r in for a few reason. im going to stick with the 3.0 and rebuild it. After getting the runner home I quickly relized that the previous owner had alot of wire with little knowledge on how to use it. Many things were hard wired or spliced. wires loosly running through and under the dash. its a mess to say the least. I will be forcusing on putting the interior back to stock and getting the front doors that were swapping into actually working. (the front doors are electric doors that are hardwired ) and will be addressing the motor and making everything really clean and and functional. pics soon

when i got it

so today i simple greened and pressure washed the engine bay and well the entire truck. tried to get every piece of dirt i could off. Also pressure washed the motor. normally i would not do this but this motor is the dirtiest thing i think ive ever worked on. looks like a 3 year old attached 20 lbs of black play do in every crevice.

I took the spark plugs out hoping the crank would finally turn over and shoot water out, long story short the crank still wont budge. Almost tipped my motor over though. Plans for tomorrow will be take the oil pan off and see what the assembly looks like. if i get far enough maybe the heads too.

Does anyone have a rebuild kit for the 3vz that they would recommend? i would like an oem kit but am willing to go for a higher quality non oem kit.

heres the runner right before i started digging in

while taking the intake of i discovered about a quart of water and this

pulled the Supra out so i would have some more room for equipment and parts

fan and radiator out of the way

egr pipe that goes into the intake

got a screwdriver and a wire brush and went to town

resulting in 20 lbs of dirt and grime

yanked it out of the garage for a simple green and pressure washing

well today i tool the oil pan of and the whole right side of the motor. I was pretty surprised at what i found.

well the past couple weeks have been very eventful. now that its nice out i have alot more motivation to get out in the garage. In hopes of getting the 3.0 running again i bought another motor off CL to pretty much just replace the disgusting one i have now. that didnt turn out so well as the the one i bought has very bad scores in cyl. #6. so now i am completely rebuild the first one again. here some pictures.

Here is obviously the best way to take of cam bolts. ( seriously tighter than crap)

And i thought i had a pretty big garage. clearly not big enough

so i found out that my block is too pitted from rust to just hone out. guess im gonna have a bored out motor.


How many of you guys are running a bored out motor? notice any difference with power or anything?

 

well the block is out at the machine shop getting decked, tanked and bored out. So i decided i would address the heads. cleaned the heads and all the ports. ported and polished the exhaust runners, port matched and removed casting flaws from all runners and ported the coolant passage ways. this is what i ended up with

 

Great build thread man! Gasket matching is some awesome stuff. Its amazing how much difference that little increase in air flow can make.

Im diggin the giant trucker naked lady door panel. Might have to do that to my runner. haha

has anyone used the stock exhaust manifold and just blocked of the crossover inlet and ran dual exhaust off each side?

 

I know a guy who has it works just fine on his pickup. I think i remember reading though that you can swap the manifolds side to side. So if you want you could get another passenger side manifold and run it on the driver side but I'm not 100% on the swap side to side someone with better knowledge please chime in.

 

I've got a extra set of manifolds I'll see if it works. I don't see how cuz it'll be facing forward slol

 

Anyone ever use the '' upgraded injectors '' off of eBay that have a cone spray pattern?

i called the machine shop and the block will need to be bored so im pretty sure ill be picking it up monday. excited to get this thing back together

 

Word is in, gotta order some .500mm over pistons.

Anyone see gains with the 3vze on a small bore like this?

Quite a bit of progress today. Got thw piston rings installed. The block and the lower intake painted. Plans for tomorrow: paint upper plenum and install the rotating assembly.
