Thatguy1295's 89 Single Cab SAS build

So heres my pretty little 89
3VZ, 5 Speed, 4.88's, 33's, rear spool, no lift, cut fenders.
Performance= impressive









Then I bought an 01 taco.


And nobody needs two pretty trucks, right?

So I SAS it. Hired a friend to remove the stock IFS, do the leaf spring hangers, build custom spring packs and setup the high steer. He's been doing them for years and did an amazing job.





Wishin id took more pictures of this part but I didn't.
Rebuilt the front and rear axles completely.
Rearend's got Chev 63 springs, 5.29's, Spool, new brakes and wheel bearings.
Frontend Custom spring pack, 6 bolt knuckles, high steer, Longfield 30's, 5.29's, Detriot high pinion diff, and some extra armor.



Then began the exocage. I did not have a shop to work in so this was all done outside. And with no help

Bed goes by by.

Then I got some 36'' swampers for cheap.



Now lets drive it

And yea I fixed the front tube to bumber transition.

PARTS LIST: Longfeild 30's, 5.29's, spool in rear, detriot up front, six shooter knuckles, highsteer, dual optima yellow top's, chev 63's in rear, pelican 1660 tool box, 2 8K winches F&R, Hella 550 lights, on board air (AC compressor mod, with oiler, and oil separator), long field hub gears,
real waterproof led ground lights for night wheelin theres more

RECOVERY/GEAR IN TRUCK: High lift jack, Shovel, Axe, Saw, 2X25' spools of 3/8 cable, HD snatch block, 5 D rings, block and tackle type come along, home made 3/8's snow chains, Glock 9mm, first aid kit, 154pc craftsman tool kit, and of coarse 2 winches

This trucks got dual's in a parallel configuration. But I run an isolator with 2 batteries on my other truck. All depends on what your using it for the most. Winching, stereo, ect...

I went with 2 yellow top optima's mostly because on of the batteries is located behind the passenger seat. Didn't really want a plastic box full of acid in the cab with me. And their awesome batteries, just coin. Mostly did dual's for the winches on this truck, but haven't had to use them very much, which is good but still nice knowing its got plenty of juice.

ive seen you on this form for awhile now and have always wanted to see a build thread on this rig and i love it! ive ot my 82 and wanna runs 36s how much lift did you have to go with? im putting 3in spinrgs under it now but idk if thats enough, really dont wanna do a BL...

Not sure about the lift since it was a conversion from ifs to solid axle.

I used the rear springs up front. To me it seems like a good 6 maybe even 7 inches taller then it was with stock ifs. Plus I cut 2'' out of the fenders.

If you want I can get you some hard measurements off the frame. Give you an idea. Though I think your frame has more of an arch in the front cause it came with a solid axle. But let me know if you need some info.

It depends on how much you wanna clear them by. 3 inch would be plenty.

How did those home made tire chains work for ya?

Thanx.. The chains are a toss up. They seem to work awesome in really icy choppy snow. But in powdery deep snow they actually seem to make it harder. Especially for those behind me. But they were definitely helpful up by mt. rainier on some of the loggin roads were its just rough and nasty. Air down to 10psi with the chains and there aint much stopping it

I think more importantly I just always wanted to build a set, even if there not necessary.

yeah you can def some measurements, im trying to clean 36s and i know 3in springs def wont be enough, were did you get your shackles at? a friend of mine has ones in almost the same length and he can clear anything, the places he got his at went out of buissness.

Does your tierod hit the frame at all? How much uptravel do you have?

Tie-rod doesn't hit on the ramp. But theres paint missin on part of it, so I know its rubbing a little if I hit the bumpstops hard enough.

Made the shackles.

Ill set up the ramps and pull some measie's for you guys here in the next couple days

Definitely a change from how it was stock!

I notice that in the first pic of the SAS, you have an early, non-gussetted front axle. A later pic shows gussets. Did you add them?

Chains not so good in powder? Learned something new...

Why two winches, instead of one that you can move front to back?

Your the first to notice. I actually switched housings during the sas. I got a newer trussed housing for free, I pretty much had it completely dismantled already so I figured why not. Then I added the upper truss myself.

Permenently fixed winches can be mounted in much better spots in my case. And I like the simplicity of having them ready to go. No plugs, pins, having to move your winch in/under the mud. Winch power plug ins get all nasty and stop working after a while. Mostly just like gavin winches front and rear, plus the rear was a little light so I'm ok with some extra weight.

Plus the front winch is hooked up to controls in the cab for quick use

Have some ideas, but not sure how to compare the 2 yotas for lift hights.

Only thing I can think of is motor mount to top of axle. Since I know our frame or different. Mine is 15'' from top of axle to the top of the fram portion of the moter mount.

Travel is rediculous, short of posting all the specs. The bottom of a front tire can be 3 1/2 feet off the ground before the rear tire starts to pick up. Lots of flex, and lots of travel. I am currently running a limiting strap in the front so the driveline doesnt pull apart. So I can't actually tell you the max travel of the front axle. But the articulation is unaffected.

Nice truck what do you have planned for in future?
Dual cases mostly. Does great without it, but would be nice to be able to take a nap while the truck is still drivn.

That and lots of wheeling....
