Though I dont want to be the one to P in your bowl of cheerios, the 3.0 is a gutless engine. I'm not trying to bash the engine, but it really lacks in the power dept. Now, I know I have one but if I had to do it all over again, I'd go with a newer model with the 3.4. The 3.0 does however have more torque than the 22RE...so you'll notice a difference there. Anyhow, best wishes with the 3.0 and new to you project...Again, I'm not trying to put the 3.0 down, I'm just stating it for what it is and hoping you dont expect much more like I was.

So best of luck with the engine and new project...I just wish I had more space at my house for more than 2 project vehicles...I'm just jealous thats all.

Brian, when you pull the heads do no unbolt the exhaust crossover, lift he whole unit. Also modify the exhaust collector area to move te hot exhaust away from the #6.
Nice truck. Go headers, and an isr to wake her up a bit.

Ted,

My cheerios are already sour so no worries. I don't expect much out of the 3.0 in fact i had been deliberating on swapping a 3.4 in but i really should be saving money for my apt so that plan is out. When i rebuild it i plan on adding a few goodies here and there to beef it up a little bit. I think i'm going to start a new thread after doing a little research and see what people suggest to beef her up.

I appreciate the concern though. And no need to be jealous!!

P.S. hopefully it will have some more power over the 22-REally-slow.

The way the headgasket blew is unique, the car was not driven hot. It was driven normally around and when it was parked overnight and it cooled down the headgasket must have sprung a leak so when the morning came the 4Runner wouldn't start.

With that being said, i am going to be putting in new pistons and all that jazz.

I wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.

Thanks for the tips RB, i'm sure there will be many phone calls made to you to help me figure this out.

What is an ISR? I searched on google and all i could find was "Infant Swimming Resource" lol

Congrats on the the new rig! Are those KM2s I spy?

My only concern is that you say you want to use it as a DD, but I'd bet my bottom dollar your 86 is more efficient than that 3.0. Is it just a high mileage thing with the 2.4?

Brian, if you are watching my son's thread, you will see that we pulled his 3.0 for a "freshening-up". basically, doing everything but rings. it will be going back in minus it's stupid crossover pipe and WITH Doug Thorley headers. between the headers and a future ISR mod, I think it will be OK. No racing here, so the horsepower department or lack thereof, is fine with us. considering it had way more power than my truck to begin with.

as far as I know, his motor does NOT have a head gasket issue compression tested just fine. i would recommend the obligatory checking of the heads for warpage thing on yours though.

by the way, good find on the 4runner.

ISR= Intake Silencer Removal

Basically simplify the intake plumbing, it will give a bit more intake noise(I like the sound, some don't). This mod also lends itself to add another larger VAFM, Cressida, Supra, some Camrys. There is a thread around here somewhere, but I'm on the phone.
