Well a few months ago I purchased a 91 4runner. It runs great and already had 1/2 axles in it. The bad part is that whoever put the axles in it the first go around wasn't exactly a rocket scientist, so more than a few things were done sub par. So I decided to rescue the old girl and put some big boy goodies in it.. so here are the specs..

As purchased
!991 Toyota 4Runner
146,xxx miles
3.0 v6 with an auto trans
all windows and locks work flawlessly even the back glass
Dodge dana 44 front axle
Dodge 9.25 rear axle with the spiders welded
15x10 black steel american racing wheels
36x13.50 gumbo mudders dry rotted
steering non-existent had the cross bar but no link to the gear box
no front drive shaft
the front suspension has 5" superflex leafs
the rear look to be stock dodge 1/2 ton leafs
the rear mounts are a joke made with 1/4 thick angle iron and booger welded to hell

37x12.5x16.5 goodyear mtr Hummer tires I got 5 for under $400
Procomp 16.5x8.25 rockcrawler black steel wheels
84 Dodge Dana 60 Front axle 8lug with lock outs
78 Ford Dana 60 rear axle 8ug full floater
Yukon 5.13 gears front and rear
35 spline Detroit locker for the rear
Ballistic Fabrication Fab diff covers front and rear
Ballistic Fabrication High steer arms and crossover kit

Parts still needed to complete
Front brakes
Rear Disk brake conversion
Sky Manufacturing pitman arm
Sky Manufacturing Brake master cylinder adapter
new front and rear driveshafts
re-design the rear suspension would love to do a 4 link with coils but dont want to relocate the gas tank at this time, so it looks like a new rear leaf setup.. need suggestions for this
and im sure that more garbage will come up that will need done..

and I also got a set of toyota axles front and rear in the deal which im trying to get rid of along with the dana 44 and 9.25 axles

I plan on getting Flanges for the front and rear diffs and running high angle driveshafts on both. I am going to drive it on the street untill I get in trouble..lol.. but im going to build custom steel removable fender flares and maybe pin on drop bumpers the cops around here arnt too bad there is multiple trucks running around with 38"+ tires and bumpers that are quite a bit higher than mine are gonna end up being.

Once the motor or trans goes I do have a spare 3.0 and trans but I may do with a LS or dodge hemi platform and run the NP205 divorced t-case I have sitting in the shop and twin stick it..

Cool looking project.I hope you get some time to undo some of the poorly done welding someone else did to the truck.
Should turn out to be a bada$$ rig in the right hands.

My wife cant wait to drive it so im taking extra care with it and trying to build it to handle what ever she can throw at it when she drives it..

Well I got a call today about some stuff I had listed on craigslist, so hopefully I sell the stuff this weekend and I can buy the rest of the necessary parts needed to complete the runner.

Finally got the rear suspension kit ordered as well at the front shock mounts/gussets. Oh and the pitman arm and the master cylinder adapter. Pics will follow when parts come in.

Got the rear suspension all welded in and I really like how everything is looking so far. I had to drop the tank to get everything welded in solid and I noticed that all the lines were about ready to rust through, so I will be relocating the gas tank next to behind the axle. Don't know if I want to do a fuel cell or use a ford rear tank like I have seen on a few other trucks.

Started modding the spare tire mount on the back to fit the 8 lug setup om running now.



Got it 80% done and ran out of welding wire. Damn damn damn. Lol

What size spare are you planning on? I dunno how far I'd trust the factory tire mount.

I love 1-ton builds, though. Sick!

I got 37s for it the tire will only be on there when we go wheeling not every day driving

Just a heads up on the rear tire carrier, if you dont cut and raise the mounting surface you'll be dragging that 37 all over the place and it will tweek your carrier depending on how bad you drag the tire.

Trust me on this, I have the exact same setup.

What I did was, just cut vertically the mount right behind the wms and raise the whole surface, brace it and it will hardly drag at all.

Well I'm back. Started a new job a few months ago and am on thirds so my sleep schedule is all messed up. But got home from work this morning and felt good so I hit the shop for a few. And here us what I got done. I decided to mount the rear shocks outside of the frame because if I mounted them in side I might run into clearance issues with the fuel cell I'm planning on. Anyway. I took a set of trailgear front shock hoops and shortened them a good 6 inches and tacked them to the frame. Here is a few pics of the progress.

Does it have all the smog stuff for CA on it?
and does it run? (Asking cause your thread says it needs a fuel system mounted).

It still has the cat and all the o2 sensors. I do still have the stock tank and stuff with all the goodies in it. Which I can hook up and it would start up. It sat for nearly 2 years and after charging the battery it fired right up. The fuel cell has all the hook ups that I can think of for emmisions equipment. As far as vent, feed, return, and filler. Some fab work would be needed to mount the cell underneath behind the axle.
