Saving a 1993 Toyota Pickup 4WD

Saving a 1993 Toyota Pickup 4WD

Found this Pickup on Facebook marketplace of all places while looking for a new project. I've always loved these older Toyotas but I've never owned one. Picked up this 1993 Toyota Pickup DLX 22RE 4WD 5 speed for $900.

It had been sitting for about a year after a deer hit. Odometer says 116k miles and the previous owner who has owned it since 1995 assured me that's the correct mileage. The title says he bought it with 20k miles in '95 so I'd assume I'm the 3rd owner.

The pickup is kinda rough and I probably overpaid, but I'm new to the Toyota scene.

Radiator was smashed into the fan and cracked it. Other than that it ran and drove onto the trailer. I did notice the infamous 22RE clacking from the front of the engine when I started it. I knew I'd have to look into it.

First thing I did was power wash it and clean out the interior then pull off the bumper and other broken pieces.

You can see there is some work to be done. Going to have a friend help my straighten out the core support so I can put a new grille and bumper on. I also need to find a correct drivers door as the blue one has the mirror in the wrong spot... and it's blue.

Picked up some wheels and tires off a wrecked 4Runner and put them on. Also removed the crusty rear bumper and gave it an actual bath. I removed the radiator and condenser to start getting the metal pulled back straight as well.

Decided to pull the valve cover to see what was making all the noise. Sure enough it was the drivers timing chain guide. So I ordered parts from engnbldr. That's pretty much where I'm at. I also got new grille, radiator, and shroud.

Awesome job so far!

I always love seeing these old trucks brought back to their former glory.

How's the frame? Any substantial rust?

Thank you. The frame has typical surface rust and is a little flaky but I haven't found and frame rot yet. I've used the hotsy power washer at work to really blast the frame and it hasn't blown a hole in it so I think I'm ok. I will probably try to clean it up a bit and paint it or something.

Thanks. The plan is to ditch the truck payment and daily this for a while after I get it road worthy.

From what I've seen and read, I believe someone installed an SR5 cluster into this pickup. Not sure why or when.

Truck has cleaned up quite well. I would bet that the SR5 cluster is original. Welcome to Yotatech.

Go to the dealership. Ask a service writer if they can print you out the original build sheet. It'll tell you what all came with it from the factory and the price. Pretty neat. And I'm pretty sure the tach gauges were options for DLX trucks.

Thats one heck of a deal you got there my friend. To find a non rotted toyota in the midwest is unheard of.

It cleaned up really well.

Thanks, I appreciate it! The drivers rocker is pretty rotted due to some previous shotty body work. The previous owner told me it was hit on the drivers door at one point. So it was fixed and a new aftermarket door was installed and that rusted out along with the rocker. So he replaced the door which is wrong cause the mirror isn't supposed to mount to the door skin. So I've been looking like hell for the correct drivers door that is white so I don't have to paint anything haha. So let me know if you have one! Also need a front bumper and valance eventually.

Got some parts. In the boxes are radiator and grille assembly. Also got a new shroud. Need to start working on it.
