I picked up a pretty good red hood today off FB marketplace. I think i overpaid…It’s not perfect, but good enough for this rig.
And it was local, and I probably would have spent more time and money to find another one, or I would have spent close to $100 just to buy the paint to make the white one red. And that wouldn’t have been able to happen before late spring. So i guess I got a decent deal. All i had to do was bolt it on and wash it.
Red hood. Much better.

i have a set of those front seats, same color. they aren't as dirty, but the material is thin. the cushions are in really good shape, though. don't have the passenger seat frame/assembly, just the cushions and covers. complete driver seat.

have the transmission center trim piece, too.
Hmmm. Remind me what parts you were looking for, as I am looking just about every day.
Obviously i need a seat base but will first try to rehab the rest. I know the material will clean up after my learning curve with the vertigo seats.
I soaked the rear seat belts in purple power, brushed them with a stiff bristle brush and rinsed in hot water. They came out beautiful!
I wonder why the center belt is labelled “CENTRE”? This part of VT wasn’t that close to Montreal.

wouldn't you just use the seat base that came with the 4runner? my seat bottom/top will fit it exactly.
Here’s a fresh video as i was troubleshooting the engine tonight. I could not see any trouble with the valvetrain and the valves seemed to be adjusted ok, but i didn’t check with feeler gauges. Just rotated the engine and checked cam and relative valve clearance.
Here’s what I learned:
*the oil smells like gasoline
*the plugs are black but consistent.
*i could see a “1.50” on one of the piston tops with a scope.
*the timing chain has “USA” marked on it.
*the cam looked ok
*this is what it looks like when you run it without the valve cover. The timing chain throws the most oil. I covered it with my hand. It ran for about 30 seconds. Could do better with some shields and a lower idle.

Nice find, seems like Uhaul should have given YOU the 20 bucks for your trouble. My wife has never understood why I drive such distances for vehicles and parts!
I honestly thought the hood was covered with snow when you picked it up. Even when you said the 'white hood has to go' i thought you must have been talking about the white top, because I thought they were only on 84-85 4R's? lol
Keep after it! Great to have a helper, mine's off to college now bummer!

my #2 '87 sr5 4runner, white with gray stripes, came from the factory with a white top. my #1 '87 sr5 4runner, which is red, came from the factory with a red top that has been since painted black.

I thought I read somewhere that very early 4Runners ALL came with either black or white tops regardless of body color, then later in production the top was color matched. So your white 87 with white top makes sense, but this red 87 with white top threw me off. Either I got bad info or maybe they replaced the top...or hey maybe they got the hood and the top from the same 4Runner!

the owner did get the hood off another truck and i believe he said he got the top off it also. It would make sense because the interior top trim is missing, so it appears the top has been removed. The owner would not have gone through the trouble of removing the top just for a joyride.

true for '84 & '85 (black/white), but not true for '86 to '89. the tops were not all color-matched to the body. for example, in '86, the options/combos were white/white, red/red, med blue/black, gloss black/black, bright gold/white, silver/black, dark gray/black, and brown/brown. in '87, the options were white/white, red/red, black/black, topaz/white, garnet red/white, brown/brown, silver/black, gray/black, light blue/white. '88 and '89 further changed, with different combos available - more black than anything, but also llight blue tops, and white and red.
I’ve indentified 4 small welding jobs this truck needs.
Here is the worst one, where the driver’s floor meets the rocker. So much salt…
Interested to see how you tackle that job. I have not pulled my carpet yet but I fear it may look similar because I can tell from underneath the driver side floor, front left corner where it angles up, is rotted through. There are so many layers of ??? undercoat maybe? that I can't even tell where the metal begins!
Do you think that body mount in the pic is going to be rotten as well? I would like to replace all my body mounts at some point (dry rot) but - same reason I have not pulled the carpet etc - I'm trying to stay focused on getting it running first!

I’ll have to get a closer look at this before i decide how exactly to fix it but the best way would be with a patch panel cut from the floor of a rust free rig. Don’t know about the bodymount, but will see. We fixed far, far worse on my buddy’s rusted rocker 330 BMW. I’m not supposed to weld anymore - Dr’s orders - but we’ll see…
