Just fueled up the GooRunner and checked gas mileage. Last tank was mostly highway. 179 miles/9.17 gallons = 19.5 mpg. A new personal best for this rig with automatic trans. 👍🏻
Just fueled up after the weekend 228 miles, lots of it highways between Boston and CT.
10.5 gallons = new personal best of 21.7 mpg. Pretty satisfied with that!
I had a thought about trying to turn off 1 injector at sustained highway speed. I know GM did this with some v8’s in the late 80’s but don’t know if any mfgr is still using such a scheme.
Anybody think it would improve mpg?

it would be difficult to turn one off, as they are all wired together to fire at the same time. that, and i doubt you'd see better mileage running on three cylinders. better mileage can be attained with an engine rebuild.
my 2nd '87, which now has 275+k miles, had a complete engine rebuild at 244k miles. with the 5-speed, i consistently return 22 to 24 mpg during the summer, with highway speeds of only 65 to 70, and secondary roads at 50 to 55. if i drove an entire tank on secondary roads, cruising at 45 to 55, i would expect to hit 25 to 26 mpg. my last tank (filled up yesterday) sat at 22.4 mpg.
my 1st '87, which sits at 227k miles, has an untouched engine (other than basic stuff and a head gasket). during the summer, at best i return 22 mpg, and more often hit 20 to 21. winter is 17 to 18. same transmissions and gearing in both. the difference is the rebuilt 22re is tight and has slightly more power (pistons are one size larger) and the valvetrain is new, etc.

I was thinking just install a switch from #3 injector to the dash so i could manually cut it once up to cruise. This engine had supposedly 10k miles since the rebuild and i was able to confirm the bearings were fresh and oversized and valvetrain was spotless. It’s running great with good power and not using oil or leaking anywhere. The only thing was my compression test results were about 135. I should try it again.
sounds like the motor is in good order (it likely has fewer miles since rebuild than mine now does - 31K). i assume you have the same axle gears i have - 4.10s. otherwise, if you have 4.56s, that might be why you get a little bit lower mpg.
i get the 24+ mpg when running the 235/75r15s, and very close to that when running the 31x10.5r15s. i just swapped in my 32x11.5r15s/wheels, so the mileage will go down a bit, even with the odo correction. on the other hand, it's nice to cruise the highway at 70 mph and less than 3k rpm.
I feel bad mentioning that we only put on maybe 80 miles last week heading out to Windsor Locks to meet with Alex then to Pomfret. I can only imagine what kind of mileage Alex put on!

I believe the gears are 4.32 because it’s automatic trans. For all the people that knock the auto’s, i really like driving it. As long as you keep it in the powerband, it goes fine.
Spent some time under the Goorunner finishing the hitch install. Just drilling a couple holes in the frame and socking down all the mounting bolts but now it’s good for mounting a bike rack and yanking on. Maybe i will work on making the snorkle actually snork next.

i have not driven a 22re auto, so i can't say. the 3.0 auto was fine for the brief time i was driving the parts runner.
with the auto, i think 22 mpg is pretty good. the slightly lower gears (4.3) will make it hard to get a lot more out of it. 5th gear, and the 4.1 set, allows the manual transmission version to coax that little bit better mileage. if it were me, i don't think i'd try to shut down an injector.

if alex was in his 1st gen, he probably enjoyed it. of all the vehicles i've owned, i enjoy distance driving the most in my 1st gens (strange, i know, but i do). better than the accords i've had, better than the subaru or corolla, better than the camry, and far better than the volvos. most of those got better gas mileage, and all but the volvos could go farther on a tank of gas, but i like the driving/seating position best in the 1st gens (the second accord could do 600 to 620 miles on a tank (and i did so on multiple trips).
The 4Runner is my road trip vehicle of choice! Has cruise control, A/C, and a good stereo. Also I'm trying to get up over 500,000 miles so no complaints from me.
My son and I pointed the Goorunner North and in less than two hours were in Thornton NH to take a ride down the Pemigawasset river.
Since it was Monday, we basically had the river to ourselves. Ready for launch Down the road, a nice curated collection on display. Some attractive pieces of yard art.

A little farther up the road in Lincoln, NH we stopped at one of our favorite attractions, Hobo Railroad. We knew the restoration of the famous “Flying Yankee” train had stalled but were surprised to see it loaded on flatbeds, about to roll! We learned it’s moving to Conway NH. Hopefully it will be completed there and run again some day.

Next, we took a ride down rt. 112, the Kancamagus highway. Since we live at about 100 feet above sea level near Boston, I wanted to test the altimeter. At the highest pass the sign says 2855 ft and the altimeter said about 2900. Seem to work fine. Not Pikes Peak, but we’ll take it. Goorunner ran great. Turn off the o/d for climbing mountain roads.
Then we got back on the highway for the boring drive home.
280 miles round trip for the Goorunner!
