their are some numbers on the driver side towards the pan i believe, but i dont know what you can compare them to.

the only reason im bringing this up is because i had gotten a 1985 22r and found the block was about 1/8 in taller then my 1987 22re. i was never able to clarify if it was because of the R and RE or the years 85 and 87. one person told me tht 86and up engines were the same while 85and down engines were the same

Who made your chain? I think I could be just as Twisted said though maybe the block is 1/8inch shorter than the 88 you think is orignal

No, the reason is the tensioner is holding it back. It's tight just pull up on it and it'll go...I used a screwdriver in the hole on the gear on top of the cam and just lifted slowly. If the tensioner is good and not stuck it'll release you'll hear a squishie sound coming from the cover. It's the oil being pushed back in.

Don't force it just persuade it...

well i have everything off, ie gas tank, brake lines, drive shaft, its ready to either cut in half and make new frame rails or i know a guy that has another 88 like mine but with a solid frame and a smoked motor, only wants $200 for it, i am still trying to figure out which route to take.

Buy it and it might be easier to do a motor swap...either way buy it.
