kevino's 1991 pickup rebuild
Hi All, my name is Kevin and this is me and my truck's story:
Purchased it in October of 2010 from a friend. Very stock truck except for the fact that is purple (aforementioned friend tried to paint it Toyota's blue pearl, but he failed).
In November I was hit by an F-250 and it damaged my entire driver side of the truck. Thankfully only body damaged occured, see below. Essentially turned it from convex to concave!
I elected to keep the truck and use the insurane money to fix the body. After purchasing a new fender and replacement door, my engine died! It had low compression in two cylinders and as we later found out, had warped and cracked valves.
Since I already had the insurance money, we decided to go forth with an engine swap and get the bad boy up and running again.
General Part list:
-driver side front fender
-driver side door
-remanufactured crate engine from Spokane, WA
-clutch
-flywheel
-altenator
-starter
-new belts
-new spark plugs and wire set
-rotor and distributor cap
-fuel and oil filters
-radiator and oil pump professionally cleaned
-various engine sensors (ugh)
-fuel injector gaskets and o-rings (18 total, ugh)
-head gasket (x2, ugh)
- *ugh = stuff that had to be fixed because we broke it or had to be redone after the engine was reassembled
-hand cleaned most parts that were removed and the engine bay
-drained the transmission fluid and replaced with redline synthetic
More pictures and details to follow...

While waiting for the engine to arrive we put on the new fender and door. Was kind of a pain the ass switching the lock mechanism, but oh well.
Next up was pulling out the dirty old engine. Bet you can't guess what color the truck used to be!
Throughout the process I had the help of my dad (and his garage) and my dad's neighbor Steve, who had swapped a 22re a couple years ago.
Now, knowing we were going to drain the transmission and get it cleaned up, we had hopped we could pull the tranny out with the engine...
It was not meant to be!
Once the engine was out it was banished to the corner of the garage, alongside my neglected skis.

We cleaned the engine bay, transmission, bolts, washers, etc etc. Got the radiator and oil pump cleaned. Lots of cleaning.
R side (cleaned) vs L side (not yet)
Transmission cleaned up
Then the new engine arrived
And its all reassembled, ready to be put back into the truck
Dropping it in
All settled in
We then of course reattached the tranny, driveshaft, exhaust and then the rest of the electrical and top end

I have put 11k miles on the engine since the swap in Janurary. For the most part have been pleased with the swap. Things I still plan to do:
-finish body work on back part of cab and front part of bed
-find new canopy
-repaint truck
-get the wheels fixed up (rusted in parts and lots of chipped paint)
I will continue to update as I progress.

Truck is coming along great. Lookin forward to your progress. Good luck and like seeing someone doing engine and bodywork. Post pics of your bodywork if you get a chance.
