Keowidan's 84 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Hello! I got this 1987 4Runner with 185,000 miles on it for $1000. Came with these shot 33's and some decent 31's which I have since put on. I've torn out all the carpeting and door panels and begun painting the interior. The exterior is in the process of being sanded and primed. I got some masonite to make some rear panels with the cutout for the speakers, I saw a few ideas on here a few weeks ago with custom cut wood cargo panels but I can't seem to find them.

I've painted the top with rustoleum semi gloss... looks good and has held up for a few weeks! I also got a rear seat from an Isuzu Trooper I'll be putting in shortly... I'll post pics tonight of my progress so far!

Some More

Well, I went to the local Pull a Part and found a home made center console from a Dodge Caravan... it was pretty much just a wooden box with a foam covered lid and covered in vinyl. It was only 9 dollars so I assumed the pine, screws and foam it was made of was worth more than that. So I took it to my pal's shed and we went to work carving it up to fit my runner.

foam and all goes through the ole table saw. Beveled the foam.

It looks a little off in the picture, but it's since been adjusted to flush. I'm going to paint it black today and install the switches on the front masonite panel. It's pretty comfy!

Next we cut up some masonite panels for the rear, I got some spray on rubberizer I'm going to coat and seal them with.

Looks like it fits! I'm going to fasten it with the new push in fasteners like the stockers had. I'll also be mounting waterproof speakers.

Gotta scrub out the bed and start the rubberizing! I've painted the rear seat panels, I'll take pics of the interior when I finish it.

The interior is coming along pretty well... waiting on the new carpet. Rubberized to cut down on road noise.

Thanks! I took the carpet up to the car wash last night and blasted it, then tried a batch of rit dye... I think it might work!

I've been piece by piece bleeding this thing of any traces of red/burgundy... so far so good! I really like how the rubberizer turned out on the dash. I'm going to find some black or gray seats at pull a part on Saturday, swap out the wheel for a more classic style one. I've already painted the side panels in the back and the front.

It's fully primered, I'm not sure what color the exterior is gonna be, but the interior is black.

I like the center console, can you put up some pics with it installed?

Where in KY are you? I grew up in Owensboro, went to UK, now living in the flattest place on earth, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Yeah! I'll get some pics of that for sure. It's great, plenty of room to stash stuff away and once I get everything back in I plan on mounting the rear window switch on that piece of masonite it front. I painted it black, I think it looks pretty good! It's the perfect length for your elbow to sit on too.

I live in Louisville. Lexington is pretty nice! What's up down in FL? I bet the weather is pretty nice.

I wish I had put the right YEAR in to the title! It's an 1987 with a 22R.

It's going to be a big weekend! New front seats, figuring out if the RIT dye will work for the carpet, figuring out what's up with my clutch fork, finish the primering, finishing the rubberizing and new shocks!

I do plan on moving that roof rack to new mounts on the shell... I know the fiberglass rails are a no-no! It's funny, I saw a guy here in town rippin' down the road with a HUGE rack with an aluminum canoe strapped up there... mounted in the back on the rails. Shine on, you crazy diamond!

I'm also thinking about taking the body lift off... it's a huge lift and I don't really plan on putting larger tires on. Those are 31's, I was thinking some beefier M/T P265/75R15 would do the trick... Although there is considerable sag in the rear, which should be figured out soon. (springs?)
