Justinvd's 1988 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Well I finally have a garage so my 4runner is going under the knife
This is how she sits right now, blown top end and rotten frame, ifs

I also got my donor 4runner today wich is an 87
Stuff involved:
Frame swap
Sasing but with dana 44 wagoneer leafs in the front
63" Chevy leafs going in the rear
Dual tranfer cases
Standard swap since my junk is automatic
Tube bumper front and rear + rock sliders
New top end for engine + a header

Its nothing special, pretty typical build but ill get pics up of some of my stuff tommorow cuz thats when my build is officially getting under way

Justin

Well camera is still Mia in a box somewhere but i thought id post what ive done. Cleaned up my 63s but im fighting with a broken bolt in one of the bushings haha and im at a seriose lack of tools since my stuff is all at work now and alot of my stuff is cluttered up in boxes. But i did manage to cut the spare tire carrier out and put in a new cross member for absorbers to attach. I also boxed in the rear of the frame and used some square stock and the end for the end cross member. And I also mocked up my tube bumper/quarter panel guard and reciever for the hopes i have a winch one day haha. I also picked up some f250 shock towers for the front. Anyways pics to come asap

Rear half of the frame

63's

Ive been making this stuff based on measurents taken off my 4runner wich remains intact. The paint looks a bit yucky but it looks good when its dry and this was just afte a coat. Im currently fitting up my sliders and shock towers.

Frame is for the most part done. After some extensive measurig on my white 4runner I buttoned up the front. No sure how the waggy leafs are gona sit so I made the leaf mount kinda long so i could drill holes depending when I get all the weight on.

Here are the waggy leafs, my buddy set them up with the blocks to move the axle forward. Apparently they preform excellent off/on road so I pretty excited

And I took a quick pic of her topless before I pull her in beside the frame for all the swapping.

Jeep is yucky but the owner was giving me some help so I let it park in the driveway haha

Today Im starting the swap, pulled my 4runner in last night. Im not entirely what order im gona do it, but im thinking about taking the rear axle out and installing under my frame, then picking up my sfa and installing so ill have a rolling chassis to work with while I swap the body/engine/everything else over. Not entirely sure though. What do you guys think?

Since im in the middle of the frame swap while i had my engine out i was gona rebuild the motor cuz Its been smoking white and blue. Smokes white untill it gets warm then burns blue everytime I give it gas, specially when i sit at a light or something idoling then accelerate. I thought my compression would be low due to valve seals, head gasket, head, rings which would explain the smoke but I just did a compression test and it turned out ok. #1=165,#2=160,#3=160,#4=155. I thought it was supposed to be around 170-180 so it seams ok. The main reason for this post is to ask what you guys think I should check for. I want to get this figured out before I pull the motor so while its out I can fix whatever needs fixing and then it can go straight onto the new frame and not have to be pulled twice. the only step I didnt follow for compression testing was doing it at running temp so I might go warm it up and try.

Retried it after I warmed it up #1=170,#2=168,#3=182,#4=150

So all went up about 5 pounds except #4 cylinder went down. I only drove it around untill the thermostat opened and warmed up to running temp. I got some weird looks cuz I was ripping around the neiborhood with no hood on.

So any tips would be awsome.

hmm#4 looks a lil shady.. have you tried a leak down test?

put a lil oil in the cylinders then check again.

also you are holding the throttle wide open correct?

Yeah I tried it with a bit of oil in the cylinders and the compression stayed the same. And yeah Ive been doing it with the throttle open. Im thinking its a valve issue. No i havnt tried a leak down test yet but I think ill be doing that now.

Took the head off and braught it to the machine shop. Apparently my head was in sad shape so its being rebuild and machined and i'll have it tommorow. Ill also ordered a seal kit for my 22R-E so while its out I will being doing that cuz there are some pretty bad leaks. MY engine is totaly unhooked and ready to pull though. Ill have some more updates soon but ive just been dead tired after work and not have the energy to drag my butt out to the garage. I did get another coat of paint on the frame though.

Havnt had time all week to go out to the garage, but I have a 4 day weekend this weekend so im expecting to get it just about finished

Here are some updates from the last set of pics

And my new body lift, pretty sure i could clear 38's now

Its actually just blocked off the frame so i can jack it up a bit more slid some planks under and pull the frame out from underneath, and hopefully the body will stay where it is. Should have more pics tonight with the body and no frame.
