Idle Engine problem(s), (3.0L 3VZ-E) tried many tests with no luck 🙁
Hello! My 1989 Toyota Truck (3.0L 3VZ-E) starts right up every time, but after the engine drops to idle, it begins to "huff and puff" as seen in the video and especially highlighted in the shot of the muffler. While driving, it accelerates smoothly and with plenty of power. But when I get to a stop, it begins to rough idle,“huffing and puffing” and attempting to lurch forward, although I’m applying the brakes, even occasionally inching ahead. When cruising, if I take my foot off the accelerator, the engine will “miss and lurch”, but as soon as I accelerate, it goes away. Truck never shuts off. Again, he “huffing and puffing” is especially evident in the exhaust (video).
Stuff I have done so far:
Replaced the throttle position sensor, no change.
Sprayed carb cleaner on vacuum hoses (at least the ones I could find) looking for a leak, found none
Did a (rudimentary) smoke test, found none (at least I didn’t detect one)
Changed air filter.
Clamped the Brake Booster vacuum hose - no change in engine idle.
Also, the power steering component leaks oil. I know the power steering is connected to the vacuum system. It's never been great a producing "power steering" even after I top off, (turning the steering wheel somewhat smoothly) but eventually provides no help and the wheel becomes hard to turn, but not crazy hard.
Rotor, distributor cap, wires and plugs are all fairly new. Timed correctly. MPG same as it ever was.
Brakes fine, but I’ve been told brake booster could be failing (as mentioned, truck inches and lurches forward when stopped). Did brake booster tests I saw on Youtube (w engine off, pump brakes, turn engine on, pedal *does* go to the floor board)
Someone suggested maybe the brake drums are worn (which is why truck inches forward), but when hand brake applied, it holds fine.
No Check Engine light on. Could an OBD1 code reader provide a clue?
Could it be the EGR? Should I get a pro to perform a better smoke test to look for an elusive vacuum leak?
I've tried to take it to a shop, but nobody will work on a 1989 Toyota truck, too old!
All suggestions are welcome, and thank you!
