GrizzlyGreenKid's 88' 3.0 Pickup Build Thread
So here is the truck I bought this weekend, to start off the guy wanted 3,000$ talked him down to 2,000$ and its a 1988 3.0 3vze has 207,xxx 5 speed with 33s and a 3 inch body lift. Truck just had head shaved, head gasket, main bearing, gaskets all around, new shocks tons of stuff surprisingly it had tons of power...on the other hand the interior and body was needing some love.
But all and all it's a super tight Toyota the suspension and drive train are in good shape for the year. This will probably be a long build thread as it is my daily driver and I'm in highschool still and I am a volunteer firefighter. The pictures uploaded in the first post were taken right after I got it home after being on the road all day. But stay tuned, coming up soon I'm getting a tool box, fender flares, replacing the hood/fenders, painting, doing the main seal sometime in the near future and a whole bunch of other stuff.
Recently done; 5/18/13-5/21/13 Full tune up, degreased everything, fixed vacuum leak temporarily, put on toolbox, changed all axle and transfer case fluid, poped out a few dents, cleaned the interior as good as possible for the time being.

Heres the body parts that came with it.
Heres the flames sketched in on the bed probably adds roughly 11-14 extra hp depends if I'm running premium or not.
Heres the backseats they looked horrible, and actually had no seats.
The bed as you can see in this picture isn't aligned with the cab planning to fix that soon.
The inside of the bed is good, little rust mainly surface, will be rhino lining.
Bed has pretty faded paint, will be painting. Possibly a new bed or a bob it?
Passenger side interior.
Dent on passenger fender.
Front view.
Engine bay, runs great other than the vacuum leak FIXED** and needed de-greased bad.
Driver side interior.

UPDATE** 5/26/2013
Heres the tool box. By the way its used pulled out of one of my old toyotas.
Full view with toolbox.
Heres the interior after a few hours cleaning some accessories a little paint and some camo duct tape. , and it really cleaned up surprisingly.
The current mileage.
Heres the engine bay after being degresed and my jerry rigged vaccum leak fix.
Incase anyone is wonder it is a sour cream container hahah.
Would like to hear some feedback or what you think about the truck. And or what you think I should do it. Also I will be fixing the vaccum leak soon with an actual fix, what I did was just for the time being since its my daily driver.

****PLEASE HELP ME PICK A COLOR SCHEME FOR THE TRUCK!
So I was thinking for the body two tone red and black, and I hope y'all love my art work haha.
Then I got a pair of stock 99' 4runner rims I want to put on there when I paint the truck, they look like this.
Then I thought if I painted them black and mounted my wildcats on them they would look pretty dang good like these.
So this is what I kinda like the looks of but I'm open to any colors just want it to be different and stand out, so if ya got an idea please post a picture of tell me the colors you think would look good.

UPDATE** 5/29/2013 Didn't do much today took some IFS flexing pictures because that's what all the cool kids do, and later I put my 3-wheeler in the back of the truck and was happy with my suspension little to no sag with it in the bed surprisingly.

I like the truck man. Really clean. I've lived in three states in the last 32 years. All in the rust belt, PA, IL, IA and its sooo hard to find a truck that's in the condition yours is in.
As far as the paint goes , I'm pretty partial to the stock grey. I think it looks the best. And the rims..I like the newer aluminum ones but agree with others that the current ones look great on it.
The fender flares really make a difference in the stance if the truck. Hard to believe that they would but the sure do.
Glad to hear that some work had been previously done to the engine before you took ownership. I prefer the 22re but had a 3vze in my last ex cab and it was great. Ran pith and strong.
Can't wait to see what you plan to do with it.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. Yeah I got lucky with this one has little to no surface rust..and the funny thing is it came from Tillamook, Oregon on the coast and they have a lot of rain and salt there, so I made sure to go through it. Then later I realized from a barely visible sticker on the tailgate that its from Idaho which explains the pretty new looking Oregon license plates and the little to no rust. Yeah the guy I got it from was a logger he had tons of $$$ and this was his hunting rig because he didn't wanna scratch the paint on 1 of his 3 lifted F-350s lol. So he bought it with a blown headgasket and had all the work done and decided to loosen up a bit and get one of his 700$ monthly payments a little dirty instead haha. But when I went to look at it I really wasn't sure if I'd buy it cause I've only had 22re's and my friends have had bad experiences with the 3.0 but after seeing the motor and looking at all the new seals and the work that had been done I couldn't pass it up and after getting behind the wheel I fell in love with it. So yeah I got a lot I want to do to it in the near future, I think I will keep the rims on it right now and sandblast them and paint them black and for the paint of the truck probably like silver and red, or silver and blue haven't quite decided. But thanks for the comments and be sure to keep checking on my build. Ohh and by the way man you got a really clean looking 4runner and the thing looks like a damn offroad beast.
Sounds like a good plan on the rims.

UPDATE** 5/31/2013 Been a busy day but I got to do a little on the truck tonight ohh and you can take a loom at my other little special project.
Left light cleaned and shiny, right one dirty. Just washed them and used some cleaner wax.
Dirty tail light with light on.
Clean tail light with light on.
So you guys will probably laugh at this but one tail light had a bunch of cracks so I pulled out soldering gun and melted the cracks together from the inside so they don't leak.
Clean headlight. Again I used cleaner wax.
Dirty headlight. Before cleaner wax.
This is the replacement passenger fender I was gonna put on.
Dirt underneath the stupid chrome fender flare thing.
Not gonna use it now too much rust, good thing I have another.
A little wax test, I'm assuming no one has waxed this thing for a while. I'm gonna wax the whole thing in the tomorrow will take pictures after it's done.
A little off topic, but I thought you 4x4 fanatics would get a kick out of my other project although it's no toyota. It's an 1964 mercury comet on a custom tube frame 4" in. lift with a 289hp on a 1967 ford bronco running gear, suspension, axels, dana 44 in front and 9' inch rear and it's fully 4wd.

UPDATE** 6/1/2013 First of all thanks for all the comments guys, I really appreciate it gives me some motivation to get off the couch but needless to say my toyota already gets every spare minute I have. So did a lot of stuff today mainly a lot of landscaping thanks to the yota! and I cleaned up all the interior better, cleaned the rims, degreased the engine again, and spent like 4 hours waxing.
Toyota vs. stupid looking leaf plant haha.
Got a load of bark chips for the walk ways and garden.
After waxing.
I have to agree with you guys on the rims they cleaned up pretty well.
Super clean interior.
Engine all cleaned up.
Front frame bend, assuming a previous owner hit a tree or something. Not to bad no cracks or nothing, clean title and drives fine, I've been trying to figure out how to fix this and I came to the conclusion I'll probably cut it out and weld in a new one or straighten it out and and weld a plate over it to strengthen the front although I probably won't do it for a while cause it doesn't effect anything so it's on the bottom of the to-do list.
This is the driver side of the front of transmission.
This is the passenger side of the front of transmission. Seems to be leaking from the top end of the motor doesn't look like a rear main, since it's leaking down from the top assuming it's valve cover gaskets or ?
Picture of the bad cv, slight wobble at 50mph+
Will try to keep updating this as much as I can, but after coming up from the shop tonight wasn't feeling to well and I gotta buckle down this next week and finish my finals strong, then school will be over and it will be toyota time 24/7.

nice looking truck!!! It is amazing how much some elbow grease and some cleaners can do to change the appearance of a truck. Keep up the good work! Nice score on all the extra body pieces too. You could always sell or trade that stuff for items you need on your truck, or keep them in case bad stuff happens.....

As for the front brace damage. I would straighten it as best you could and then use a brace to strengthen it. Like the one from front range off road.

These are just suggestions take them as you will. Keep up the great work and good luck with the build!

QUESTION** 6/2/2013 Okay could someone tell me what gearing this may have? I know stock is 4:10 but since it has 33s maybe a PO changed it to 4.88 or 5.29 gears, Just curious cause I recently noticed I can grab 50mph in 2nd gear (which seems odd to me) with no problem with the stock r150f transmission looked up the ratios on transmission First Gear: 3.830:1 Second Gear: 2.062:1 Third Gear: 1.436:1 Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 Fifth Gear: 0.838:1 transmission appears rebuilt and has newer gaskets and seals. Don't know if the transmission or axles have been re-geared so I thought I'd see what you guys might have to say. I know how to check and count the teeth in the axle I just don't really want too hahah.
