cyhu's 1989 4Runner Build-Up Thread
Hey yotatech guys, Been on here reading for a few years now and Im not much of a thread poster.. (I like reading)
This is my first post so just a little presentation of myself (for who cares)
My name is Charles I am an owner of CP Performance in Quebec, Canada for over 7years now. The majority of our builds are custom fabs on 90's toyota cars, butwe also do general mechanics for all the orther makes... Last year we upgraded to include our own engine shop (Yeyyy more tools to play with
) Doh!!! less time for personal toy's!!
My present cars are
Supra 91 1jz Sard
Supra 89 2jzge Msquirt (the wife's car going single T in spring)
4 runner 89 (this post)
91 pickup 22re for sale
AE86 DMCC ready (sale pending)
89 4x4 camry (long term project)
I specialize in wiring and fabricating (Welding / machining / scraching head etc..)
A bit of history on the 4runner.. I got it dirt cheap.. Always wanted a pickup / runner as a toy. All the other ones I ever got were to rusted. The truck I finaly found was not rusted which I was surprised.. but was dented on eigther side from previouse owners.
Anyways the reason for my thread today is that I really cant decide what to do with my 4runne r
Had some bad luck I need to kick my self to start doing something again on it.
Right now
Old pic 2 year ago day I finished the body job (I have to upload photos much cleaner look since..)

I pretty much decided to leave suspension as is this year again as I have no time for major trailling. I need to do a frame off (busted the frame jumping the truck)
Right now im looking more for what powerplan to choses.. Its a low budjet vehicule and I need to keep towing the race 240sx with it for this season.
Here are my choice for now as I killed the 22r last summer. All the part for both setup's already have unless noted
Anysetup ill do will be turbo to later go s/c I got pretty much turbo sizing for any of the set up I decide on the shelf, so i'ts the last of my worries (keep in mind any engine will be standalone so I don't care about eletronics)
first option
3vze from a 91 pickup.. it's my main option rigth now, rebuild it custom manifold stock tranny there we go. bolt on!! Just have to fab up the manifolds
. I think I'm stuborn but I really want to try it..
I have all the part needed to swap it in but a few thing scare me.
First of all what kind of power will a (stock rebuild) bottom end hold.
Second how do you guys seal the top to bottom on turbo setup? I cant seem to find anything. Stud or MHG
I really need input for this option engine is apart right now and Im ready to order the parts if I got that route
Second
1jz 2jz or 1.5jz Ill choses the day I start.
.
Jz's are my main area of knowlegde so I don't really have any question on that.
I would have to purshace a 1jz bell housing and change the inputshaft of to a r154 on the r150. Or ethier figure out a special pilot bearing and custom clutch disk to keep stock input shaft (sucks but im out of r154 parts so Bearing ideal would be a cheap quick option)
the rest is just normal custom fab for me. (trim here, bfh here, weld here etc...)
I need input guys.. I dont talk much but ive been here reading for a while now and my local area guys are telling to much to go 2jz... I need an alternate opinion.
Thanks in advance
Charles
