What year Corolla? I had a 78 when I was a kid. Funny how I was embarrassed to driver her back then but now I think it's cool. They are hugely popular in New Zealand and race them etc.

When I get an old banger I'm looking for a 77 Civic. Love that car and it will be funny to drive it. It will be more like wearing the car it's so small.

Not quite the same car anymore.


This is when ppl still called them Jap crap. It was a tin can but oddly not rusty. I bent the frame from driving into a curb during a tail slide. Wheel hit flat and buckled the frame. I limped it home and me and my dad tried to straighten it with a pulley and chain block over a cement/steel pole around a power box. She never drove right again. Had some really fun steering vibrations at certain speeds.

Then I had a Honda Accord once where I knocked a brake caliper off from jumping it. I think it was an 88? Anyway, I launched it off an old railway hump in the road. It is quite steep but the rail lines are gone so it's like a table top at the skatepark. Cleared the whole top which was long enough for two tracks and space for the trains. Up one side over the flat and down the far side. To be honest I didn't expect to jump it I just hit it fast. It was awesome.

That road section is now flat, I imagine I was not the first or last moron to hit it.

I don't drive like that anymore and as a result my future kids will never touch my vehicle and will be getting slow 4 bangers until the try and kill yourself stage wears off. Or they move out and buy their own car; whichever comes first.

That was my two word answer and she knew that I meant it. I did offer to find her the same here or close 6 cylinder... that was a month later and by then she had changed twice at least to two different vehicles including A 4 wheel drive older Chevy... I believe the other thing that she wanted was a 240 Z... Another big hell no! Lol.

I know that it's not the most economic but in regards to giving yourself a little power, I highly recommend the older Cressida... What a fantastic are my 84 whas. It had a ZZ series Japanese engines and it was about 30 more horsepower , and boy did you tell that when you hit the pedal... The old accords were really nice as well. My youngest daughters mother had and 85 station wagon in that light metallic green... I helped her sell it was 545 thousand miles!

Have you ever thought about something like a 67 or 69 or whatever it was Corona? Darn those things are cool! Lol....

Last one is by far my favorite. It's a Corolla right? What year?

Hopefully when I finally have a 16 year old a car like that will be retro enough to be cool. A first car should be an old one. It's character building. Plus guys I knew in school who's parents bought them expensive cars had no respect for them. Wrote them off etc. I hope I don't raise a ˟˟˟˟head.

Another car I absolutely love is the Datsun 510.





Some ideas in the works for future career options came up today. I might start doing property development. I didn't piss away my mining money and might be able to pull it off very soon. I can always build myself a nice shop and keep wrenching a fun activity instead of work.

Depends on a potential job the missus has lined up. If it works out I can get her out of the office and working for us as well in a couple years.

When this reno is done I'll post up the before and after shots. We have done a good job I think and it turned out quite profitable.

Got the house sold before the reno is even complete. Figure I have a few more weeks of work ahead.

I know right!

So many people like them that they aren't cheap or easy to find in decent shape as a fixer upper.

Lots of clubs around though as a spare parts network.


I've also gone back to thinking about the Blazeland kit. It will stay on the truck for resale after my SAS. However, the SAS will be awhile coming so I want to maximise enjoyment of my truck now. I've got more than enough saved for it and it gives me a project while I collect parts for an SAS and gain skill. I still want to build as much of it as possible so it will be a long project.

I currently do not like my IFS setup at all. Having such a difference in front flex compared to how flexy the rear is also unstable. A bolt on project seems like a good idea for the short term and it will help me enjoy trails a bit more.

My move is pretty soon so once I'm settled in I'll come to a final decision.


Chef, I thought girls where more trustworthy drivers at that age? I know my sister wasn't anywhere near as much of a jackass. Not that she didn't encourage me when she was my passenger. She was with me when we got beaten in a race by an original puke yellow Rabbit. Two white trash looking dudes in it, shaved heads, scruffy bears and all. At the next lights one hangs out and screams just wait till we get the nitrous perfected. It was awesome and my love of little sleeper cars started. I was driving a 90's Buick Regal. It was a fast car with loads of power but that rusty little Volkswagon Rabbit was screaming fast. My sister laugher her ass off so yeah I suppose a hell no on that old Nova was a good answer in reflection.

Found this for $1600. I can't byu it as I'm not in the area but it is making me think of the 1UZ option a lot. Those old LS400's can be found for really cheap and it is a common swap.

I'm going to scale back some plans with my truck for a bit with more simple things like that Blazeland LT and cheaper ideas to practice for my end goal. I'll mess with mine as IFS and a rear leaf swap. I've spent enough in it's form now to rip it apart but it could use improvement.

Then I have my toy and can take a good amount of time on a frame up build. I really want to do it myself so I need to practice and get the skills.


So new plan is a mix of the old and new to learn skills.

Blazeland LT, rear leaf swap and a T-100 axle so I can keep the gears etc I have already spent money on. I want to be able to carry more weight. Rough road and loaded down on the trip was too much for those FJ80 coils sometimes.

Some sort of traditional engine swap that is well documented and easy for me to follow.

I've been saving my pennies so I'll be doing something soon. Probably that Blazeland kit because it's easy and quick to help have more fun on the BC trails I am a month away from enjoying. It's also sold in Washington state so I can just pop across the border to go pick it up and get it installed.

I can't wait for my upcoming move. We hope perhaps Vancouver Island. Depends on a job the missus is chasing. We really hope she gets it. I'll be able to say more soon. If she doesn't find a job that's great too. We leave Yellowknife in just over 4 weeks so if she has no work we are going exploring again.

It's especially exciting because housing is so much more affordable than Vancouver. Yellowknife is so expensive we wanted a break. Vancouver Island will also enable me to try and do my own thing for work. Fingers crossed.

It will be good either way.

Wow! That was seriously a great read for the end of the evening... Very promising and uplifting, Red! I'm hoping for the best and that you guys are blessed with a really nice place in a very reasonable price range. Nothing more frustrating, that certain point in life, the not being able to save enough.... Saving a little is good... Saving quite a bit more is a lot GOODER! Lol.

Sounds like a solid plan, good sir! I'm really feel torn between the 3RZ and the 1UZ.... So I know what it's like to be but that point when you want to start planning some stuff out... But you have to make a decision which route you are going to go. Lots of variables in there. 1UZ Swap is definitely a bit more work on your rig then a 3.4, correct? I am really impressed with how much power they seem to put out in these trucks.

Wondering where RMA has been... Any idea? Someone sent me a joke private message and said that he ran to Mexico after robbing a bank! Hahaha.

S'all good, at least you have some really good 2nd gen 4Runner 1UZ install references to turn to.

I do think the 1UZ will be more work but with all the literature for that swap I feel I could do it. There are wiring kits out there for it too I think.

A 3.4 swap would be even easier.

Been a bit since I read this thread and have to chime in, I guess you all eventually grow up! (As for me, I'll get back to you on that.)

My oldest daughter (now early 30's w/ 2 girls and twin boys - always hated kids growing up) wrecked 5 freakin cars before she was 24. She still says she loves me so I guess I wasn't a total ogre. Balance that with her younger brother, just finished college in Dec, got 8 job offers (EE), and bought a new Corolla. With auto. (Dude, really? LOL.)

Thanks for the memories, Red. Things will work out great for you. You got sense to follow your heart. I threw away my career because I basically raised my kids. (Divorced now; should have worked on the marriage, but that was the ex's call). I've absolutely no regrets. I never thought about going up to NW until I read your posts. Now if I get mine done, and can survive this winter (transferring to CO), I'm hoping to do just that.

Sorry for just barging in. But i am looking to add the same size of tires on my 91 p/u and am just wondering What size of rim did you need to fit the 35's and what was the off set. I have pretty much the same suspension setup as you but have leaf springs instead. Currently I'm running 33x12.5-15's on stock wheels and just bought a set of cooper STT's. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the thread.

I have 15" rims but forget the backspacing.

You will want to get the tires pushed out a couple inches for sure. My rims are quite deep and compared to a stock rim push the rubber out at least 2.5 inches. They are some Pro Comp steelies. I'd love to get those new Interco Bird Dog Rims. No ring bead locks oh yeah.

I think I'll get a set after I get that Blazeland kit to pull the track width back in some.

You may still need to repair the groove your steering stops might have made. I have not but I don't reverse at full lock or it rubs a bit.

When I helped the previous owner do the lift and tires he said we were putting 4.88 gears in to help with mileage and as far as I've seem it's doing great I get between 14.5-15 mpg in the city and 18-21 on the highway. At about 26-2700 rpm in fifth gear. Right now I'm happy with how it's going I just got a set of STT's from a buddy for $800 and am going to put them on when my 33 kumho MT's wear out.

My profile pick is how my truck looked till last week. Now I did some cheap rust repairs for the upcoming winter until I can find some new body panels. I'll post more pics this weekend of it with the new paint.
