They are all common in Oz.

Landcruiser paradise.

So if I where to take these I just take the axles? I don't need any of the steering linkage correct?

The knuckles are the same as the mini truck ones right?

I'm thinking leafs mostly to get the project going faster. They are certainly much more simple. Perhaps something I can more easily tackle instead of coils for now.

The FJ62 axles will make the stance wider than one I am out now I think. I know they are 3" more narrow than the FJ80 ones.

Thanks guys, keep the opinions and ideas coming. I need it and this score will not last forever.

Pretty sure fj60/62 axles are same width as ifs. You'll end up wider in the front by however thick of wheel spacer you'd need to clear the calipers. No stock steering parts would be needed, high steer replaces all the steering. Need the stock lower trunnion caps, though.

Jeez 3" more narrow is a big difference. Well ecen with the 1985 axle we installed in my truck I still had to use some spacers to clear the v6 calipers I used. I just went overboard and used too big of wheel spacers lol.

Buddy said he would hold it for me awhile. I've been going to him for awhile and he's a good dude.

Another pro to this is that with a coil over build I do not have the skills yet. Leaf springs though I'm sure I could tackle with the help of some friends. This should help keep the project out of the too hard box. Having all this money rusting away in the yard will get me motivated.

It's too bad the axles aren't just a little wider however, the axle looks like it belongs there. It has the same wide stance I've got now with my rim backspacing.

The offset rear diff, think that will be a big issue?

I did find a write up on getting a diamond housing full float axle in the rear but use the 9.5 third.

$400 to $500 for a front axle and the rear third if I don't figure out a way of getting over the offset diff obstacle might still be a great bargain.

That is a 3rd Gen in the photo. I think the body is a couple inches wider than the 2nd Gen. Mine will look even more bottom heavy. I like that look.

Thanks for the well wishes. I don't think I'll heal enough to avoid surgery but I think after it will get better fast. I don't take pain killers pretty much at all now. If it gets sore it is manageable pain and I've not had a painful back spasm in a couple weeks. You know, the night time keep you awake ones.

I remember you have a hefty injury list, I know you know.

Oh hey, did I mention I'm in the middle of a renovation as well?

I've cut a giant hole in my kitchen wall and am painting. There was an appliance sale which kicked this off. Our house still has the original 1985 stove and fridge. Also some idiot covered the exhaust for the stove, glad I've opened walls to have a look. Nice thing about drywall is its easy to break so I can get that done alone. The cabinets are getting painted white, cabinets are expensive as hell.

I had some help hanging the drywall back up to save some grief with the injury. I'm getting a contractor in to get the windows done. They lost their seal and at -40C you want things right in the house.

Due to the long bleak winter we are painting the kitchen a nice red and the living room a nice blue with white trim. The rest of the house will be more traditional to not hinder resale.

I'll get some photos of that up as well. Might as well make this some sort of blog, everyone else does.

Update, back surgery done Monday morning. Hurts like a bastard. Especially that first night, had to go back to the Dr. and get some stronger pills. I've had lots of bad sports and idiocy injuries like a dislocated elbow and untreated broken ankle. Monday night was the most painful event to date.

It's going to heal up just fine and the stronger pills help loads!

Awesome, super awesome truck update.

I bought those FJ62 axles with the 3rds and sway bars for $400. Due to my recent surgery I asked if they would cut them off and deliver them for $500 total. He's becoming a friend over there so with my surgery he was willing to go an extra mile.

They should have the time to do it soon.

Not a bad price I think. It comes with the Aisin wheelhubs as well.

Now I need to learn about leaf sprung suspension. I know next to nothing about it because I was so set on getting too fancy. This being more simple should keep the project moving at a more steady rate. The added bonus of lower cost also means I have more engine budget. I still really want a 2UZ so hopefully it will now be more realistic.

Dude, ..... just making it through anesthesia is a WINNNN! Lol. .... but sorry on the pain! .... Yet it's veryyyyyy likely coming with a huge gain!!! CONGRATZ!

Sounds beefy in the rig end.... and you'll get the springs handled in no time, it's not too bad

WOOT!

Healing up well.

Getting really excited about my compromise on what I was originally hoping for. Leaf springs are the compromise allowing me to go after really doing it up right.

Have been looking at a few kits. Not really sure where to go or who makes the best leaf springs. Don't know the best way to stop axle wrap. It's not an issue on my truck now but it could be if I don't build this right.

Hopefully my axles will be in my yard next week so I can get some photo's!

Glad to hear you're doing better dude\
Hey just thought you might like to know that when i spoke to the dudes at AllPro offroad they said that they build their leaf springs to not have that problem. He called it "anti-axle-wrap" Anyway that was brought up because i asked him about how will the springs do as far as axle wraping goes and thats what he told me. I'll take some close up pix of the new 4" leaf packs that i got so you can see how they are all held in together.

Also I know you asked about being able to carry a load while still being able to perform for your long expeditions. And not having that horrible sag when loaded up.
This was also one of my concerns because i do carry alot of stuff on my trips too. Even more now with the roof rack. So What i plan to do with my new springs is remove the stock overload leaf from my stock ones and add it to the new AllPro ones.

My next door neightbour also has AllPro leafs and he said they were great leaf springs but when he would try to carry alot of gear his rear would sag too much. So This is the method that he did and he says it fixed his problem. He bought his leafs a few years back ago and Kurtis from Allpro said that theyve since redesigned the leafs to make them stronger yet still able to perform great so i might not have that problem when i get mine installed

2 other ways you can fix this sag issue that he told me about was to get 1" longer shackles then what is provided and that will give you 0.5-1" more lift in the rear. OR you can just get 5" lift rear springs instead of 4". or a combination of the 2.

I'm in the process of getting the 4" ones on my truck so i will let you know how this all goes alright. But definitely thinking of adding that overload leaf to my 4" lift springs right off the bat because i dont wanna deal with having to remove them and then add another leaf later on down the road. Better just to get it out of the way early.

irab88, thanks dude. I've seen those before but never really asked what they where for. I don't have leaf springs on my truck so didn't ever ask.

Welcome to the thread, don't think I've seen your posts before.

Anyway, I found a 2UZ in my old neighborhood fur under 1k CDN.....

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/01-02-03-04-T...31b5c9&vxp=mtr

If we had moved back by now I would risk major wife wrath and just go buy it and stick to my guns. She'd eventually let me keep it at some sort of cost to me, dinner present etc.

Too bad I'm way up here. We're starting to talk about the future and getting my mechanic apprenticeship going. I need to grab parts before the wage cut. It's a lot cheaper down there though. A house will cost 3/4 to half what my house here cost. That's a lot less mortgage!

I'll keep my eyes peeled. I'll find another one.

He's asking $895, I wonder if I could beat him down to $700. I'm pretty good at the haggle. Soooo much fun. I think it's one of my favorite parts of this hobby. Junkyarding is awesome.

The other week my buddy pulled an electric motor fan unit for his 22RE radiator. It came out of a Mazda 3 I'm pretty sure. $60 and it really looks like it's going to work.

Too bad he doesn't have a build thread. He's done lots of cool little things like that.

I could always ask if I could get a friend to store it a little while? I bet that would be a bit to far for the wife... I'm going to ask her when she calls from the airport. She's part way through a trip to Australia.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Called a very good friend I grew up with, has trailer, will pick up, wrap it and store it in his shed for when I move back soonish.

What a bro!

Just had half the conversation with the missus, it's looking possible!

She just landed and is calling back after dinner.

Possible cheap 2UZ swap!

fingers crossed

Reason wins, she said she didn't mind if one cost a bit more later if I could see it myself and my back was better.

She was positive about me finding another and getting it under better circumstance.

I got a good one.

Couple things, changed my name from an accidental imposter name. Smokejumpers are firefighters who jump out of aircraft to help build fire breaks etc. I use the name for fps gaming and used it here childishly. Dropzone once sent me a PM asking about it. Felt like a bit of a fake having to explain.

Anyway, I learnt a lot about Australian rules for offroad mods. Pretty much all illegal.......

To lift your truck more than 2 inches you need an engineering certificate. To go higher you will also need to do a lane change test on a highway setting.

Tire size, you can only fit tires to a max of 2" bigger than the maximum factory option which for a 2nd Gen is 31X10.5-15. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. This means I can fit a maximum of a 33" and still might get unwanted police attention. The 35"s are out..... I'll end up doing what a lot of guys do and run em till I get caught. Take them off for the inspection and put them right back.

Track width, they don't really like you messing with the stock track width. Not sure how that will play out with my FJ62 axles but I'll find out I suppose...... The track width is stupid, didn't 1st and 2nd Gens earn a flip over reputation in the 90's?

Basically, Australia is a nanny state country....... I get frustrated with Australia sometimes. Full of idiotic restricting laws. Oh and I get to give up my guns. Only cops and crooks get to have guns in Oz. Did I mention it's disgustingly hot and full of spiders?

End whine// I do like the place, just frustrated that my favorite thing in Australia will be a mess of compromise. Buuuut, I could find a nice FJ40 so there is always a bright side in life.

What I plan now is to keep as much to their regulations as possible. I'll keep the truck as low as possible and I'll do my best to fit a rim with backspacing that will negate the extra track width. I will pick up a set of 4:88 gears to have differentials around to throw on when I get caught with my 35" tires. If I get caught too often I'll live with the 33"s. I'll do a 3" lift up front and 4" in the rear. The body lift has to go too, this should make fitment of a 2UZ more interesting but I read a thread where a guy said you could pull it off.

Oh and the laws are not national. You could leave your state on an adventure road trip get stopped by a cop and have to get anything flagged fixed before you can drive it home. One cop having a bad day could really bend you over.

They dump modified 4x4's into the same category as a street racer.... They are called hoon laws, if you do burnouts etc and get caught enough they crush your car. Modified 4x4's get caught up in that crap..... Like I'm going to do burn outs with my expensive off road tires.......

The highway test and engineering certificates I understand. Keeping a backyard hack job off the roads is understandable. I just think if you got it done right and safe you should be fine but they arbitrarily gave out rules with no concept of the activity. You can still get harassed by the police even with a stack of paperwork and the mod plate stating it's all legal.

EDIT///

On the upside the FJ62 axle is very close to the IFS width. Building to Aussie specs by accident.

Wow! I had no clue Australia had so many laws against this..... wtf.... I always suspected that Australia would be the the ultimate place to offroad because you guys build all kinds of awesome gear! Boy was I wrong lol.

I can't believe everything I just read. I'd be torn apart if I had to possibly sell my truck due to crap laws of my future residency. So sorry to hear that. BTW THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP ABOUT THE TON OF SPIDERS! I HATE SPRIDERS URGH.....! Ill make sure to never visit Australia lol.

EDIT:
Btw may be too soon to say this but let me know if you plan to sell yout truck. Lol my older brother absolutely fell in love with your truck. Your rig is actually what made him want a 4door 2nd gen 4runner. And I know you'll be coming down this way on your last road trip before heading out to Australia. Just in case uou ever needed it to go to a good home that is.

Yeah, you don't want to be associated with those smokejumper pansies. Good news that the axles are pretty close to stock width, at least!
