85Xtra-cab's 1994 4x4 Pickup Po Boy Build

I am going to show you my build which will take God knows how long to complete. This 4x4 will be a daily driver as well as a trail rig. I am in high school/college and money is tight, so I am trying to pay for what the truck NEEDS and NOT cheap out on parts. I am no mechanical genius, or professional welder, but I am working on those skills and trying to get there. Any knowledgable tips are well appreciated.

here's a pic. I bought it like it is. 1994 22RE with 195k and 30k on atop end rebuild. The previous owner took overly good care of this truck and had the money to do it. For instance, if they heard a funny noise or if something showed very slight wear, they had their mechanic replace the part immediately. So many parts under the hood are fresh.

It has a cheap IFS 4" block lift which I believe is from Pro-Comp, 33" Firestone Destination M/T's, front bumper with fog lights, and a K&N air intake. Other than that it is stock.

I have taken care of/modded a few things since I bought it which I will get to later, but the biggest question I have right now is.. HOW DO I GET RID OF THAT INFAMOUS IFS SQUEAK WHEN I TAKE A TIGHT CORNER. I was told it was something to do with the a-arms? I have greased a few parts but I guess they were the wrong ones...

That annoying noise is where the rubber cap has worn down and lets the two physcal stops rub each other. I have heard people putting on grease as a temp fix.

Thank you, and that's what I thought it was. I did grease it but it made no difference, I'll try again, but I usually just try not to turn as sharp as I can

Wow! was going through the huge amounts of receipts that came with the truck, and I found an Ebay Motors receipt. So it turns out my engine has about 58,500 (installed at 138k) and 30k on the top end! I was excited when I bought the truck because on Toyotas 200k is the break in point

So I plan on carefully modding the truck so that it's never really on jack stands for too long, except for big stuff like an SAS. This is my daily driver.

One year later. Same spot.... College really takes your money haha. I'll upload some pics of how my truck currently looks. I know that so far this build is.. pretty dang slow, but I'm trying to speed things up now that I have a better job.

Upgrades/Mods/Changes since last post:

33x12.5/15 Cooper ST's. Love them. Very smooth on the road as well as quiet. Wearing extremely well. So far so good off road, still need to test them in the mud, they did great in river gravel though. Highly recommend them for a DD that goes off road whenever you have the chance. Ceja's Quality tire ordered, installed, and balanced for just over $900 after tax. I believe the tires alone were about $180 ea. and the tax was some crazy amount... but it was well worth it. Installed them sometime in May 2013.

Toolbox, Birthday gift from the girlfriend She liked the idea of putting groceries and school supplies somewhere else besides the small stuffy cab. I don't blame her. Adds a nice look as well.

Bucket seats from a 1994 4runner. Direct bolt on swap. SOOOOOOOOO much better than that stupid bench seat. Drivers seat is fully adjustable. Got them for $35 each including the tracks/bracket from Pick n Pull Windsor. I believe seats from 92-95 4runners bolt right into the 89-95 Pickup, i could be a little off but mine work great.

1993 4runner side mirrors. Twice as good as the Pickup mirrors. They fold, making it better on the trail so that brush doesn't change the angle of the glass. The mirror is also bigger and allows you to see a lot more. This is a very simple and direct swap. Bolt pattern is exactly like the Pickup mirrors. They're chrome when stock but I painted mine black. I got mine from Pick n Pull for around $30 each, was a bit pricey since they're electric mirrors but still worth it. Also on the 92-95 4runner. ... Correct me on any of these Runner parts if I'm wrong.

Starting to lay out my build plan. Before any thought of an SAS I'm definitely putting either a locker or limited slip in the rear and other stuff first... I don't see a point in upgrading to a solid axle if both diffs are open. I don't have the cash to do everything at once, I'll upgrade along the way, wheel, and SAS last... if I still want to go that route.

Finally found a pair of factory 4.88 about 2 hours from my house! The seller doesn't want to remove the 3rd from the axle, so he said $200 takes the entire axle, 3rd, and front IFS diff. I'll update tomorrow when I pick them up. The 4runner was a 1993 V6 auto, was parted out due to engine failure.

Picked up the complete axle, 3rd, and front diff this morning for $200. I didn't find any signs of damage, or leaking. The 3rd member had ABS but the wires are already cut. I plan on practicing removing the front diff from my 87 Toyota parts truck before attempting it on my daily driver, just to know what to expect. Also going to do a bit more research on the swap. The 4runner did have the auto locking hubs, so I'm going to see what needs to be done about that as well since I've heard several things.

I would bet the Runner you got the diffs from had ADD, not auto hubs. All you should have to do to use your manual hubs is reinstall them after you've got the diff in, then defeat the ADD system on the diff by either running a constant vacuum source to 1 of the ports while capping the other, or there's a trick with a hose clamp locking the collar to the 4wd position inside. I went the vacuum route, so you'd have to search a bit in here for "ADD defeat" or something like that.

The rig looks good, nice start having everything well maintained. Just remember to keep it that way if the choice comes between a mod or maintain when you're on a limited budget. Maintaining causes less headaches later!

Thanks for the info! And thank you, yes I would rather fix something than make a mod, unless it's a problem that won't grow or cause any further damage. Such as minor dents and dings.

Got into the welding class at the Santa Rosa Junior College. Pretty stoked to start it in two days from now.. I've been trying to get in for over a year.
