1986 Toyota 4X4 SR5 LWB
I've always told my son that we would get him a vehicle before he was old enough to drive and spend a year fixing it up. He wanted a Nissan 240 SX with a turbo, but I think I found him something MUCH better.
Today, we picked up this '86 model that needs a lot of work. There are a lot of good things about it, but there's certainly a lot to do also. The biggest concern is that a previous owner took out the original 22re and put in a 22r. They even did an absolutely fine job of cutting up the harness for me!
We'll have plenty of good times over the next year building it and I appreciate the fine forum to lean on for help!

Nice looking little truck. I am waiting for the day I can start with my kids to build there own truck. I will be a great experience for the both of you. I have got to experince some fine hack jobs on wire harnesses myself. If it is so bad that you think you would want to replace it, it really isnt as bad of a job as it may seem. Finding one that hasnt been hacked up is the toughest part. If you go that route, I can help you with the steps needed to take to replace it. Welcome to Yotatech and look forward to seeing your build.

Thanks, Terry!
I think I'm going to put a 22r in it. Do I need to install a 22r ECU and harness to make things like the speedometer and A/C work properly?

It's been quite a while since I posted this, but we've worked hard to get this truck going. My son will be 16 next month, but in the past year, we have rebuilt the motor. We had to get a new head from Engine Builder and went with the RV cam. There is now a header and a Weber 38 DGES carb to feed it.
We also had to go through the front end so it now has all new ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, and pittman arm. Many other small fixes have been done and there are many more to go.
My son and I have had a blast working on it together and I'm glad we got the chance to do it. I've enjoyed it so much, I'll probably do another one with my youngest child, a son that is turning 12 this weekend.

If you live in Lakeland, you'll be seeing this truck soon!
We live in Arlington near 385 and 70 which is just down the road from you.
My son turns 16 in late April and he is itching to get on the road.

Cool! I went to Arlington High School! My dad works out in Galloway and drives down 70 passed 385 twice a day. Cool, cool. Best of luck with the son and truck

My son is a Sophomore at Arlimgton High now. He just started working at Off the Hook in Arlington and has his own law care business in the summer. Flag him down if you see him on the road.
