DIRTCO's 1985 4Runner Build-Up Thread

40's are on (https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f88/...70/index4.html)
Tie rod is still bent but works off road (aka could trailer the truck and be OK).
I still need to seam seal and undercoat the front firewall tubing and rear tubs along with herculining the entire inside.
I also need to build some bumpers and get my new tail gate put on and glass transfered over from the dented one.

Looks like a fun trail, like Hayes said, which trail?

Bumpers (and a cage
) make a huge differance in the amount of damage you can get. If I didn't have my front bumper the way it is I would have ripped the entire front clip off the truck, several times over. Here's a picture of the driver side of the cab, you can see the spacing between the cage and cab.

And the new passenger side ...

Also, even with the new tubbed firewall my bald 37's rub a little. I figured this would happen, so I made them really smooth so they can rub and not cut or wear the tire. I could drop the bumpstops down but I like the amount of travel and how everything works.

They also rub the battery tray/air intake area, but they always have. That's my REAL bumpstop

Maybe, it could be done but there are some nasty spots. One of my friends broke a steering arm in two and another ripped his steering box off the frame. If you choose your line right you might make it through, but there are a lot of factors. I've had a friend run Carnage BV on 33's, but it wasn't pretty

Hehehe, that looks familar

I got through BV Carnage on 33's but it wasn't pretty like DirtCO said
What kind of steering arm? Was the frame braced for the steering box? Sounds like quite a bit of carnage

I think the steering arm was an old All-Pro arm, that's why he had Marlin spares.
The frame for the steering box was not plated, which led to the failure. The front bolt broke, the rear bolt pulled through the frame with the sleeve and nut still tight and the upper bracket broke off, still connected to the box. We hammered the frame flat and used a High lift base plate to get it off the trail.

Well, I woke up to find this crap every where
. I like snow but this year it won't stop, it's the end of May

I wanted to replace the windsheild as soon as possible (it was really unsafe), so I got to work.
I started by beating the B pillar back out, then I added some paint, and what would you know it's good as new.

Thanks! Your tires are a little bigger than mine so that makes a differance. I also found out that the rear of the 4Runner (from the top of the tailgate) only set's 3.5" higher than stock! There are some varibles, but thats pretty low. The front is a little taller than the rear but not much.

I would like to keep it lower but springs are way soft so pulling leafs isn't going to work.I'm running Liberty in Penrose this Saturday, I'll keep you posted on my frist trip out on the 40's.
