You got the good guage. It has the Horizontal lines and not the crossed hatched ones. I like the one you have a lot better then the other style. Dont for get to get the correct Oil Sending Unit. It is the larger one and runs about $30 for it.

I saw that, and something about carbureted trucks needing a wire ran to the coil?

Here you go. It may or may not work. If it doesnt work just run a wire from the "p" to the Negative side of the coil.

If your tach does not work, you will need to run a wire from the negative side of the coil to the "p" on the back of the cluster.

Copied.
I then ran a wire to the negative side of the coil, on a carburator coil it is a little different then a standard coil you are most used to seeing. This truck didnt come with the SR5 guage so I added it. If your truck is not Plug and Play like some are, you need to run a wire from the negative side of the coil to the little "p" to make the tach work.

Then what I did so as not to short out the electrical run beside it. I placed a piece of electrical tape over the little "p" and crimped a wire to the smallest connector that I could find.

I used tape for insulation and to make my connection to the "p".

This is a temporary connection and is on a 22r Motor.

No problem. Just be careful when you remove the old idiot light sensor. I have had one to break off into the block. Make sure it is turning when you remove it and not twisting off the head. It is a simple upgrade and nothing to be worried about otherwise. Just make sure the sensor is Turning and Not Twisting.

The guy shipping my guage cluster is an old Harley guy and wouldn't ship it until he found a box that would let him wrap it in bubble wrap 3 times and protect the tripometer. Every time he calls to update me he talks for about 10 minutes, it's pretty entertaining. He parts out yotas on eBay so I'll definitely get his SN and post it here. Seems like an A1 seller to me!!! Bought some LEDs for the cluster swap. The cluster is in amazing shape, no cracks or stack discoloring. It reads 272,000 though so I have to look into fixing that.

That is the guage that you can pull the speedometer needle off and reset. The shaft is a round pole with a pointed tip. You got the better of the two guages. If you had the other style, I would say NOT to pull the needle off but you got the good one. The one I dont like has splines and it breaks the needle. Before you put the cluster in, tighten all screws up, some loosen.

If it came out of a V6 truck you will need to adjust the tachometer.

Noticed something crazy today, when I turn right I hear a pop somewhere in my suspension. Could be the 30 year old see springs shocks and what have you. Need to replace all of it anyway.

Also when scrolling craigslist it dawned on me: I haven't seen a 1984 Toyota 4x4 on there since I bought mine. That was 5 months ago. Nothing but 1986-1995 and none are a decent deal. All either $1000 or $10000.

Makes me appreciate my rusty blue horse a little more.

Picked up some bucket seats for $60! I missed lumbar support so much i dont even care about the hole. Anyone ever swapped the passenger and driver seat onto the others' rails? just a thought

1984 Toyota Pickup 4x4-s1chkrk.jpg

The kid had an 87 4Runner SAS'd with dual cases and a roll cage inside.
It was pretty sick. Good to make a somewhat local comtact for parts. he had a ton of stuff.

Waiting on the mail people to bring me my oil pressure sending unit so i can do my cluster up. ive waited too long!!

Funny how waiting a few days can save you $30

The "pop" usually is the Steering Stops rubbing on the lower control arms. They were at one time covered with a rubber piece that is now long gone. You will see a little curved piece of metal on the lower control arm that hits a bolt like object on the wheel area. You can put some grease on and it will last a while.

You can cut your cost way down by shopping on the internet. You have to learn several sites. Ebay, sparkplugs.com, Amazon, rockauto, are just a few that I can think of right off.

In reference to your brake booster fit situation: I just replaced mine with one from like a 92ish 4runner. The fit was tight as you describe. Mine (1985 EFI 4x4) had a factory shim in there though. It's like a 1/2" plate the same shape as the flange. An extra one of those seems like it would be perfect to replace those nuts you used.

This thing is looking cool!

i plan on overhauling the enitre brake system, and probably upgrading to a T100 booster. people think turbo brake boosters are worth their weight in gold so im not going that route. theres a great thread on the faq of pirate from erikb on brakes. check it out.

Bills. Bills. Bills. It's really hard driving something every day and really being able to commit to building it. So I'm getting my Tacoma back to drive daily. I think that's going to actually enable me to do the things that I want to do.

Lol my muffler was rotten and not even connected to the pipe. Just slid on. So I took it off and got 3mpg back. And it's just a cat now so it almost sounds good.

I picked up an 83 22R with the intake, exhaust, carb, and two buckets of misc parts for $100. I'm probably going to do a full rebuild on that when tax times rolls around. Happy wheelin'

I think you will find it easier having a nice dependable daily driver like your Tacoma and your 84 as a project. Your project you can take a little at a time and there is no pressure to get it done. You can go thru it more in depth and do it right. When a daily driver breaks down, that is stressful. You will get it done, just takes a slower pace.

Word to the wise, do not buy anything but Aisin master cylinders. Replaced mine with a Store Whatever brand one and although it works, it makes a pop when coming off the clutch. With metallica blasting, it's still all I can hear. That unnerving pop.

In other news, I might trade my 97 Tacoma for a 1983 4x4 Yota Long bed. But only if it checks out. I have no business getting another Yota honestly but crap. It's a 1st gen. I gotta look at it at least.

The Tacoma is back in action. After:
Throttle body gasket
Both EGR gaskets
Intake manifold gasket
Exhaust manifold gasket
Fuel filter
PCV valve / grommet
CAT and fuel tank cleaned

Parking the 84 until I move back to Alabama early January, where I'll have access to a shop and more tools. Be back soon ( :
